The Blog

Another round of bug fixes and stability issues taken care of, somewhat related to shared layers and canvases in the sidebar, among other factors.

I neglected to point out last time that the licensing code has been modified to match that of OmniFocus, meaning that a single license key will now allow one user to run OmniGraffle on two computers simultaneously, so that should make some users out there happy.

Download at the beta page, and read up on release notes.

Cheers!

OmniOutliner v3.9 beta 1 has arrived! It should be noted that OmniOutliner v3.9 and later will now require OS X v10.4.8 Tiger or later. We'll get to the reason for that in a bit.

One complaint we often hear from users is that they can't move their data out nicely into another app when they've finished their outlining stage. MS Word and Pages are often the apps they want to move to. Well we hopefully have a good solution for you. OmniOutliner Pro users will now have a new export format “Word 2007 Format (docx)” they can use. This exports to the OOXML format used in MS Word 2008 (Mac) and MS Word 2007 (Windows). As an added bonus, Pages '09 can import this format. Both Pages and Word have outline view modes now which will show you your document in a similar fashion to what you see in OO. In other view modes, you will see your document in a flat form. Your row level styles will be carried over into header styles as well, allowing for easy style modification. This can also be used as a way to share your OO documents with Windows users that also allows editing. OmniOutliner can not import the docx format however. For more in-depth details of the export format, please see the release notes.

Another new feature we've added is a new pasteboard type to work with our latest application, OmniGraphSketcher! If you have data in an OmniOutliner file you want to graph, you can simply copy and paste it into OGS regardless if you have checkboxes or handles showing.

So why the new OS requirement? Well we thought it was time to include the new software updater that our other apps have been using for a while now. Unfortunately, it doesn't run on 10.3.9. According to the software update statistics we have, it looks like a reasonable time to make this change. Hopefully those statistics are accurate!

This update is free to all licensed OmniOutliner 3 users. Like always, if you run into any problems or have any feedback, please contact our Support Ninjas by using the Help -> Send Feedback option or email them at omnioutliner@omnigroup.com. If you're ready to give the beta a try, go and download it!

Hey OmniPlan planners, 1.6.2 rc 1 has been released!

In this version we fixed a little bug that was capable of disabling dialogs. Other than that, the rest is unchanged and if no one reports any major issues we'll be going final in a few weeks.

Please keep in mind that this version is still in development so feedback is encouraged and we apologize if it breaks your computer, corrupts your files, or ruins your weekend.

As always, please let us know if you have any questions or comments. You can contact us directly via our support page or by using the Send Feedback feature in your copy of OmniPlan.

If you're ready to give this rc a try, you can download it here!

OmniGraphSketcher beta 3 is now available! This release includes a fix for the alerts users have reported when filling certain types of areas, as well as better support for opening corrupted files. Best-fit lines can now have undefined slope, and the inspector layouts have been adjusted slightly.  You can get beta 3 via software update or from the OmniGraphSketcher download page.

Thanks to everyone who has submitted feedback so far! Please keep those emails coming - you can also “Send Feedback” from the OmniGraphSketcher Help menu.

Some time passes, some code gets written, some bugs (quite a few, in fact) get fixed. This particular release zeroes in on a number of Visio import and export support fixes, direct import of PDF files has been greatly improved, and a large number of issues surrounding groups and tables have been addressed.

Just a little backstory here concerning groups, particularly those special groups in OmniGraffle that we call tables. Way back in the day when the table feature was first implemented, a number of neato features were present that over time in testing proved to be rather problematic, so they were either removed or obscured. In going over a number of group-related fixes, we've managed to address those problems, so with this release you can do some pretty neat things, including rotating tables as well as rotating individual table cells. Give it a try and see what you think.

Alongside bugs and issues with groups are a number of stability fixes in place that relate to moving and rotating groups with lines connected within, so if you've been running into a large number of cryptic crashes, you will want to take a look at this beta release.

The beta page has returned, and the historical release notes remain in the same location.

Hey OmniPlan planners! Hot on the heels of beta 1, it's 1.6.2 beta 2!

In this version, we fixed some minor bugs around opening documents read-only when the 14 day trial runs out. We also correctly disable more controls for read-only documents and fixed some broken or misdirected links in the online help content.

On the localization side we fixed a couple of garbled strings in the German localization and tweaked the Japanese localization a little more. Last but not least, the software update and license panels are now correctly localized in many languages.

SEATTLE, Washington— April 1, 2009—The Omni Group has announced a major update to their web browser, OmniWeb. OmniWeb 5.9.2 is now the only WebKit web browser that offers support for Gopher protocol.

Gopher is a revolutionary network protocol that allows users to search and retrieve items from the Internet such as documents and graphic images. Using Gopher, it's possible to access many types of content over computers: text-based files, mailing lists, even photos.

“Gopher support is something we've been working on for a long time,” said Ken Case, Omni Group CEO. “Now OmniWeb users have the rare opportunity to retrieve data from other servers on the Internet without the complications of using an FTP program. Using nothing more than a simple menu program, users have unprecedented access to the world's information systems. For instance, just today I was able to access a weather report via Gopher, so I knew to bring my umbrella to work. The future is now!”

OmniWeb 5.9.2 is a free download with no licensing restrictions, and the latest version can be found at <http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omniweb/>.

Exciting news from Omni today, friends: we've got a brand-new product for you to try out. Introducing . . . OmniGraphSketcher.

Okay, technically it's not brand new, if you're going to be a stickler about “the truth” and all. OmniGraphSketcher was created by Robin Stewart, who designed what was originally called Graph Sketcher in 2003 while he was attending Williams College, and continued working on it at MIT where it was the basis of his master's thesis. Now that Robin's employed at Omni, he was kind enough to bring Graph Sketcher along with him, and for the last six months Omni has been hard at work developing the latest version of what is now OmniGraphSketcher.

What IS this product with the name that takes forever to type, you say? I AM SO GLAD YOU ASKED. OmniGraphSketcher is a fast, simple tool that combines the data plotting power of charting applications with the ease of a basic drawing program. In short, you use it to make graphs. Precise, sharp-looking graphs, even.

OmniGraphSketcher is designed for reports, presentations, and problem sets where you need to produce accurate, presentation-worthy graphs on the fly. You can just click and draw lines, shade in areas, connect and align objects, and add labels as you go. Or, copy and paste data from a spreadsheet into OmniGraphSketcher. All adjustments are displayed in real time, so fine tuning is a breeze.

Whether you need to make economics diagrams, illustrate a science project, display marketing data, or just re-publish the well-known Cat Proximity Phenomenon, voila—OmniGraphSketcher to the rescue. Fast, simple graph drawing, without the hassle of using a complicated data visualization program. WIN.

OmniGraphSketcher is currently in beta, and licenses are available for $29.95. Educational and family pricing are available from the Omni Group's online store.

Note: if you're an existing Graph Sketcher customer, you're eligible for a free upgrade to OmniGraphSketcher, and will receive notification of your upgrade status via email.

You can follow OmniGraphSketcher on Twitter at @OmniGS.

Now, go forth and download! You can use OmniGraphSketcher in unlicensed mode for a two-week trial, with no restrictions. Enjoy!

In case you missed the news last week, OmniWeb is now free!

But that doesn't mean that we've stopped developing OmniWeb: we've been posting new sneaky peek builds of the upcoming OmniWeb 5.9.1 release nearly every day since that announcement.  If you hop on over to OmniWeb's sneaky peek page and check out the latest release notes, you'll see that we've added support for three-finger swipes on recent laptops, made the tab drawer automatically close when you return to a single tab, fixed the Amazon rating system bug, reimplemented speech input and the Summarize toolbar item, and more!

We've also gotten pretty far with integrating the new Safari 4 beta engine:  it's now integrated into our internal builds of OmniWeb 6, and we're bringing that work back to OmniWeb 5 so it can make it into the 5.9 sneaky peek builds.

Come visit OmniWeb's sneaky peek page and see what we've been up to!
