The Blog

Liz, one of our esteemed Test Pilots, was reading Programming Ruby with Cocoa (because this is what the smart people at Omni do in their spare time, probably while I'm watching The Soup and snarfling about how Joel McHale makes fun of them there Kardashian girls, haw haw haw) and noticed a shout-out to Helpify, an Omni/William Van Hecke Joint.

What's Helpify, you ask? Well, duh, we DID mention it exactly once almost twelve months ago on our blog. I can't believe you missed it! Next you'll be telling me how you don't read “every single post” because “the ones by your marketing person suck”.

As a reminder, Helpify is a cool Python tool our User Experience Lead, Bill, built for formatting OmniOutliner 3 files into help documents. I'm not totally sure if he used actual pythons to assemble it, or what—I'd probably know more about this stuff if I didn't watch so much crap TV—but apparently it lets you author help contents with automatic formatting, indexing, and navigation. The properly formatted help books can then be dropped into your app.

Remember, in this country, you gotta make the help first. Then when you get the help, you get the power. Then when you get the power, you get the women.

Ahem. Anyway! You can read more about Helpify on Bill's original post, and download Helpify here.

OmniOutliner 3.9.3 beta 1 is now available for download! This contains mainly Snow Leopard compatibility fixes and fixes related to Snow Leopard compatibility. Of particular note is that Paste with Current Style should no longer fail under certain circumstances under 10.6 and the HTML and Word (HTML) exporters work again. We also hopefully fixed an issue that's been reported periodically caused by pasting data that contains style values beyond the range ever expected. This would pop up an alert from the OOLayoutManager and cause people to have to force quit the app.

Please note you will not see this beta in the software update check if you're running a final version. Betas are opt-in if you're running a final version and must be manually downloaded. If you're running a beta version, you will see new betas listed.

You can read the full release notes here or head over to the download page. If you encounter any problems with this release, please let us know at omnioutliner@omnigroup.com. Thanks!

It was inevitable. Try as hard as one might, there will always be those one or three bugs that escape notice, and as a result a small maintenance or point release is required.

OmniGraffle is no different in this case, and since the release of version 5.2 last month, we've been alerted to a small number of issues having mostly to do with Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), so here's a beta release to resolve said issues.

Read all about it at the historical release notes page, find the beta to download here.

OmniOutliner 3.9.2 final released

by Derek on September 10, 2009 | Comment

This release is to mainly address the OmniSoftwareUpdateCheck crash that some people will encounter using v3.9.1. If you're using 3.9.1 and OmniOutliner crashes on you when you check for updates, please manually download this release. Sorry for the trouble!

There's also a couple of minor 10.6 compatibility issues that were recently discovered that will be fixed in the next release. Those issues are:

  • The Open button will not respond to the return key automatically on the open file and attach file windows. You can still tab focus to it.
  • Paste With Current Style may fail while in text editing mode if you copied from a recent WebKit based browser such as OmniWeb 5.10 or Safari 4.

We are working to get these fixed for another release.

Please see the release notes for full details on changes and you can download it manually when you're ready. As always, please contact us using Help -> Send Feedback or at omnioutliner@omnigroup.com if you run into any problems or have a question. Thanks!

This beta is primarily to address the OmniSoftwareUpdate crash some people were encountering with 3.9.1. This issue was with submitting your system information when you had multiple display adapters. If you turned off submitting system information to avoid this, we'd greatly appreciate it if you turned it back on so we know if the crash has been fixed for everyone. To do that, go to the OmniOutliner menu -> Preferences -> Update tab -> Check the 'Include system information' box.

You can read the full release notes here or head over to the download page. If you encounter any problems with this release, please let us know at omnioutliner@omnigroup.com. Thanks!

Lots of news today, people, so I'm going to try and keep this short so you can skip straight ahead to the part where you sit back and bask in that new-software smell.

Updated: OmniFocus! OmniFocus 1.7 is now available for your downloading pleasure, and includes a bevy of interface improvements designed to make everything just a little more smooth and simple. We also re-worked Perspectives, hopefully making the process of working with them much easier. Overall sync performance has been improved (yay!), and you can now view a list of the attachments in your OmniFocus document, and delete them as necessary to speed up document syncing even more.

Also updated: OmniGraffle! OmniGraffle 5.2 includes support for support for portables with Multi-Touch trackpads, so you can now pinch to zoom in or out, resize a selection, or rotate a selection. We also added fixes to tables, shared layers, and dealt with some stability issues.

Also also updated: EVERYTHING ELSE. OmniFocus, OmniGraffle, OmniOutliner, OmniWeb, OmniPlan—hold on, typing cramp . . . okay—OmniGraphSketcher, OmniDiskSweeper and OmniDazzle have all been updated with support for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

You do not EVEN want to know what time the engineers went to bed last night, is what I'm saying.

Everything can be downloaded from our handy-dandy Snow Leopard status page. Enjoy!

An intrepid user noticed that the CFBundleDisplayName was incorrectly dubbed as OmniGraffle Pro for the standard version of OmniGraffle in the first release candidate, so here's a second candidate before going final.

Find it at the beta page, and read up on release notes here.

We're still working on adding great features like automatic creation of Error Bars to OmniGraphSketcher 1.1, but in the meantime we're putting out version 1.0.1 to ensure compatibility with any forthcoming OS X updates from Apple. In addition, this release features quite a few bug fixes, adds a “Select All Fills” menu item, and gives users the ability to import data that has text labels specified for only some rows.

You can read the full release notes and grab Beta 1 here. Please don't hesitate to email or Help > Send Feedback if you encounter any new issues or if you just want to chat about how you use OmniGraphSketcher.

Hey OmniPlan planners, 1.6.3 rc 2 has been released!

In this version we fixed a bug where some fonts would lay out with different line heights when editing than when not. We've also fixed our crash catching and reporting framework under Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard).

Please keep in mind that this version is still in development so feedback is encouraged and we apologize if it breaks your computer, corrupts your files, or ruins your weekend.

As always, please let us know if you have any questions or comments. You can contact us directly via our support page or by using the Send Feedback feature in your copy of OmniPlan.

If you're ready to give this rc a try, you can download it here!

A release candidate, and pretty much in the nick of time if some rumors about the impending release of a certain operating system are to be believed.

Speaking of which, there are a number of smallish fixes in place to provide better compatibility with the upcoming Mac OS X 10.6 “Snow Leopard”, along with some other fun bug fixes and localization fixes for our international users.

Read all about it at the beta download page, and peruse the historical release notes if you so choose.
