iPad or Bust!

Posted by Ken Case on 01.29.10 @ 9:56 AM File Under: iPad, News, OmniFocus, OmniGraffle, OmniGraphSketcher, OmniOutliner, OmniPlan

One of the things we often struggle with as a company is deciding how much to talk about our future plans and our current work towards those plans.  Our natural inclination is to be open about what we're doing, but there are several problems with talking about future plans:

  • Our plans can and will change, upsetting customers who were making their own plans based on our original plan.
  • Our plans might interfere with current sales, as customers stop buying OmniGraffle 8 in anticipation of the future release of OmniGraffle 9.
  • We might get accused of promoting vaporware, as when we started talking about OmniFocus.

But there are also problems with not talking about our future plans, as it leaves people wondering what direction we're going and whether they'd like to be going that direction too.  So, given the exciting event of this week, I think it's appropriate for us to share some of our plans with you now…

Remember how Macintosh was intended to be the computer “for the rest of us”?  That's what we feel Apple's iPad is:  the best computing device for most of the things people use computers for.  (Or, as Apple puts it, “the best way to experience the web, email, and photos.”)  It's the computer people can sit down and start using immediately, without training, whether they're 2 or 92.

We're really excited about Apple's iPad, and we want to make all of our products available for it as soon as we can.  Yes, we already had a big year planned for 2010, with several long-anticipated major product releases—but we think iPad is really important:  important enough to spend some time juggling our plans to figure out how we can introduce five new iPad apps.

Yes.  Five.  We want to bring all five of our productivity apps to iPad:  OmniGraffle, OmniOutliner, OmniPlan, OmniFocus, and OmniGraphSketcher.

This is a big undertaking, and we can't do it all at once.  We started working on iPad adaptations of OmniGraffle and OmniFocus as soon as the SDK was made available Wednesday afternoon, and we're hoping to get started with OmniGraphSketcher for iPad within the next few weeks.

OmniPlan for iPad will be a little further behind, simply because the OmniPlan development team is on the home stretch of their two-year OmniPlan 2 development cycle, and we'd like to get that out the door before bringing OmniPlan to another platform.

Similarly, the OmniOutliner team is also heavily into a major development cycle—one which affects not only the next major release of OmniOutliner, version 4, but also the upcoming major releases of both OmniFocus and OmniPlan—so that team is booked up for at least the next several months.  But while it won't be on iPad on day one, OmniOutliner is where all of our projects start and we think it will be a great fit for iPad, so we plan to adapt it as soon as possible.

What does this mean for our non-iPad apps?  Well, for the apps we're bringing to iPad immediately there will be a bit of a delay in their next major Mac release cycle:  for example, while we've already done a fair bit of work on OmniGraffle 6 for Mac, we're going to put that work on hold while we work on the iPad adaptation.  Not that we don't think OmniGraffle 6 is important or exciting, but we think OmniGraffle for iPad is even more important.  For the other apps, OmniPlan 2 and OmniOutliner 4, we're hoping for little or no delay in our upcoming releases, but there's likely to be a bit of a pause immediately afterwards as the teams shift gears and start working on bringing those apps to iPad as well.

So, that's our current plan.  As I said in my introduction, our plans do change over time—obviously, they've changed quite a bit just this week!—so please don't rely on things happening according to today's particular snapshot of those plans.  But I hope that this snapshot at least gives you a sense of what we're doing and why (and perhaps even an idea of when), so you can decide whether we're going in a direction you're interested in.  Either way, I hope you'll let us know!

Thanks for your time!

I'm very curious (and I don't expect an explicit response) about your pricing for these apps. Apple's setting another (poor, IMHO) bar for app pricing with the $9.99 marker for each of the iWork apps. I personally *CLEARLY* recognize the higher value of OmniGraffle and would be willing to pay more than $9.99 for it - but I'm curious as to your thoughts on the pricing bar and the influence it'll have over higher grade applications.

So does that mean that Omni is hiring? :)

Will the OmniFocus iPhone app transfer as is to the iPad? I'll definitely be getting one, though I'll be waiting til the 3G version comes out (April, I'm assuming). For my needs, I'll be looking forward to the OmniFocus and the OmniOutliner apps most of all.

    Thanks for doing this.

This is great news, Ken. I think your apps—specifically OmniOutliner, OmniFocus and OmniGraffle—will absolutely rock on the iPad. I can't wait to see them.

I just love you guys! Great products and a fantastically open attitude to what you're planning. I'm most excited by the prospect of iWork on the iPad and to be able to get “oWork” (i.e. The OmniApps) too would just seal the deal for me. The touch interface would be just thrilling to use for Omni Graffle, which I use for drawing schematics for my work (I design video projections for theatre shows) and the idea of shuffling objects around, drawing in lines representing the cables connecting the kit, stretching boxes and graphics by pinching. Goosebumps :)

So, I say unleash the OmniHounds, and I'll look forwards hugely to the results…

This is huge, folks. I've been very happy with Omnifocus on iPhone. I'd like to own up to balking at the price originally, but once I clicked install, it started to make sense to me. The iPad looks to be a platform for full-fledged applications, which I think is what you have understood the iPhone to be this whole time. OF for iPhone was more than a widget. I'm very excited to see where you guys take this.

When you dig through the SDK some more, let us know if OmniGraffle is going to be full fledged vector graphics. I don't know if that's possible on the iPhone, but if there is a touchscreen vector creation app for iPad…well holy crap that would rock.

    01.29.10 10:49 AM

That sounds fantastic! I am most excited about OmniFocus and OmniOutliner, and OmniGraffle and OmniGraphSketcher are very well suited for the iPad UI.

    this is cool news.

i have been sitting on the fence about the ipad until now.

i am a little bit concerned that apples proprietary chipset will go south. should have used an arm.

  11. marc

    01.29.10 11:04 AM

@joe don't worry about apple pricing.

in the real world although many apps are 99cent come-ons the closest thing to omnigraffle on the ipod is the japanese app called zeptopad and that has always been twenty bucks.

and omnifocus for iphone has never tried to undersell bento either!

  12. Gopi

    01.29.10 11:07 AM

Thanks for the update. I think that Omni apps have the potential to turn the iPad from a “big screen iPhone” into a genuine computer. OmniGroup seems to be one of the best at figuring out which features are needed and which aren't. That, IMHO, will be what determines success and failure on the iPad. iWork and the Omni suite will mean I can use an iPad instead of a laptop.

  13. Zohar

    01.29.10 11:21 AM

OmniOutliner for the iPad would be killer.  Great for taking notes in class.

  14. Jeremy

    01.29.10 11:26 AM

I can't wait Ken - y'know with iWork and the OmniApps on the pad I may even retire my old PowerBook…

  15. Brian

    01.29.10 11:31 AM

Tassia - iPhone applications will run on an iPad with no modification. You can run them in the center of the screen (iPhone-sized) with a black border around the edges, or you can activate a mode that doubles the pixels. (So the app uses more of the screen, but looks blockier.)

We expect that the eventual iPad versions will give the best experience, but until we can get those done, you'll be able to use all the apps you already own on your devices.

Awesome news. OmniOutliner and OmniFocus are essential tools for me, and OmniGraffle is very helpful as well. Can't wait to see these apps and use them - looking for beta testers?

I agree that an “Omni” suite of products on the iPad will be awesome. Count me in. Where can I send my money.  :-)

  18. Mike Harris

    01.29.10 11:55 AM

Given that I'm particularly unenthusiastic by the iPad and by the idea that the uber-restrictive closed environment of the iPhone is being ported into Apple's pseudocomputers, I'm not entirely enthusiastic to hear that Omni's going to make its Mac users wait in order to devote materials to this rather (to me) uninspiring new platform.

  19. Johnny Turner

    01.29.10 11:55 AM

Just to add another thought.  Some kind of an authoring tool for epub documents will be needed also.

  20. Mike Harris

    01.29.10 11:57 AM

A needed clarification as to the phrase “Apple's pseudocomputers”—I *own* a Mac, so people reading my comment shouldn't interpret that as a comment towards Apple's Mac line.  By “pseudocomputers,” I was denigrating the “computer” of the iPhone and, now, the iPod.  I'm quite unimpressed with the Microsoftian, censorious, 1984ish way that Apple's been running its business on the iPhone platform, and even less impressed with the fact that it's now being pushed into a platform closer to “normal computers” than to a phone.

  21. John C. Randolph

    01.29.10 12:01 PM

As soon as I saw Apple demonstrate Keynote on the iPad, I thought “I want OmniGraffle on that!”.  I'm fine with waiting a bit for your next version on the Mac, since Omnigraffle already does everything I need it to.

Thanks for filling us in on your plans.  I can't wait to see your apps on the iPad.

@MikeHarris: Substitute “complicated” for “open” or “free”, and “simplified” for “closed” or “restricted” in your comments, and I agree with many of your points.

Fact is, if you're here reading and commenting on a blog of one of your software vendors _you're not in the target market_ for the iPad. But millions of people are. Computers are too complicated for normal people. The iPad shows a new way of using computers, that will likely prove to be superior for those normal people. Experts and enthusiasts like us, well, we're going to have to adapt.

See Frasier Speirs's “Future Shock” for a detailed, extremely thoughtful treatment of this:

    01.29.10 4:59 PM

Can I just say that I'm an software interaction designer by trade, and I have the pleasure of being able to use Omnigraffle for my daily work. The one major app I believe the iPad would be perfectly fitting for would be a touch-based version of Omnigraffle. I'm thinking of the existing Omnigraffle basic eature set, but with the one key addition of being able to draw with your finger a shape, and the software determines what shape you were trying to draw and automatically corrects it to the properly- drawn shape. Draw something that has four roughly straight lines all at kinda 90 degrees to each other, and the software corrects it automatically to a square. It would make mocking-up designs so much easier than using either a mouse and keyboard or a pen and paper.

Guys, please make this happen. If any third-party can do pro-grade apps on the iPad, it would be you guys.

  34. Pixín

    01.29.10 8:33 PM

Well, that leaves iPhone and iPod Touch users with the chance of having a downsized version of each app. Always wanted to have an Omnioutliner app for checklists

You guys rock! I can't wait to see OO, OF and OG on the iPad. If it means that I have to wait for the next (and long awaited) major releases for the Mac - fine by me!

As for the pricing: You know that you can charge anything you want.  ;-)

Seriously: 9,99 Euros for each would be nice, but even 15,99 as for OF would be reasonable.

I like your plan. As the owner of a number of your applications, I am looking forward to using them on my iPad. OmniFocus is certainly totally necessary ASAP. However, I wish you'd give a high priority to OmniOutliner as well. I can't think of a more perfect app for the iPad ... sitting in a coffee shop outlining a project, article or whatever. It needs to be there ASAP. Thanks for listening.

I don't care about what nay-sayers says :  the iphone/ipad sdk is very powerful (it's the mac os x one without old stuff),  the cpu is an arm (standard), and I see no problem in a computing platform without complications.

I’m delighted and excited that you will be releasing the Omni application suite for the iPad. The one I’m most interested in is Omni Outliner Pro. I developed a comprehensive Omni Outliner checklist for auditing solid waste operations.

Now, I print it out and take it with me. I check off each item and handwrite notes in the margins. Then I have to enter my scribbling into my computer. What a waste of time.

I’ve always envisioned cradling a iPad, actually at the time I was envisioning a Mac tablet, but iPad will do, in one arm while checking off items and writing notes directly on the iPad. This is easy and efficient.

As you can imagine, I was disappointed that the iPad doesn’t accept handwriting input. Not everybody has they luxury to type while they work. Perhaps you could figure out how to add handwriting input to Omni Outliner.

The ability to write directly on the iPad would be a boon to the rest of us who use checklists on clipboards as part of our workflow. Just think of doctors on their daily rounds, coaches during practice, operation auditors in the field, or investigators at accident or crime scenes just to name a few. Typing on the job for us just doesn’t cut it. Some of us still have to write the old fashion way, with pen in hand.

For now, just having the capability to write directly into Omni Outliner would be a time saver, but in the future, the ability to turn that handwriting into typed text would be Star Trek. Don’t you just love technology.

    Hey Omni team,

Please take this opportunity to work on OmniOutliner as closer to the top of your productivity stack rather than a later development. It has been ignored for much too long on the iphone/ipod touch and now on the ipad this can be a primary tool for taking notes, making lists, etc - if you get it out fast enough it will be a top choice for students in a niche market for this device and its use in classrooms.

    Thanks!

    Can't wait!

  72. Clark

    01.30.10 1:10 PM

I'm very curious to see how you port these.  A huge and profitable gap exists right now for the ipad when it comes to note taking.  Think in class or wherever.  Simple using omni outliner as designed on the mac would be nice, but wouldn't be quite ideal (typing is going to be quite a bit slower).  A great note taking app would need to combine using both touch (freehand) and typing (which is slower).  A good combination, possibly with the intention that the user could use one of the available iphone styluses on the market, would make a lot of money.  Of all the vendors, I think Omni could do it.

  73. Darrick

    01.30.10 1:58 PM

    Jon W. And Mike Harris…

Instead of complaining, read the blog post again… They are saying that the team working on OmniOutliner is booked up working on a major release. That clearly implies they are going to deliver on that before moving the team to the iPad version.

“Similarly, the OmniOutliner team is also heavily into a major development cycle—one which affects not only the next major release of OmniOutliner, version 4, but also the upcoming major releases of both OmniFocus and OmniPlan—so that team is booked up for at least the next several months”

I personally think it is awesome that they are making iPad versions of these applications. Can't wait to get my iPad and Omni apps.

I've been hoping for an iPad version of OmniOutliner since Wednesday's events (and of course I would've loved one for the iPhone as well, although I see how it makes less sense than an iPad version).

I'm incredibly excited for the release of all of these apps and glad that you decided to let us know in advance.

I'm happy to be able to stay in the Omniverse when it comes to productivity.

PS: How “magical” will it be to use OmniGraffle on the iPad .... I can't wait.

Thanks very much for treating your users with respect. So many developers keep their plans secret or dumb them down for fear that the neanderthals in their user base will start growling if things don't go their way on their schedule. Most users understand that plans can change and really appreciate being kept abreast of developments nonetheless. Looking forward to the Ipad goodies.

Fantastic news!  I think the iPad is going to be a huge hit and is a great product from a great company.  So devoting major resources on your part is a very smart decision.  For those commenting negatively on the iPad platform, I'll bet you dollars to donuts they were against the move from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X too.  I do not see the iPad taking anything away from the Mac.  If fact, I see it as just a fantastic extension of the Mac.  I hope you will have a good way of syncing data from the Mac version of your tools with the iPad versions.

I plan to buy the iPad when it's available and would love to buy OmniGraffle and OmniOutliner for it.  I've had both of those on my Macs for years.  Please please don't price them too high.  The iPad platform is going to be huge so depend on huge sales for making your money rather then a high price.  I think Apple's strategy of pricing for the iWork tools at $10 apiece fits in perfectly with the iPad platform.

Looking forward to running the Omnigroup tools on my iPad!

    Great News

Forward thinking and exciting news from omni, hope that it has great benefits for your company and all who use your great products. It is this kind of open mind, honest attitude to development that makes for great products.

The iPad does seem to be a true reboot of computing for everyone and good software needs to be there from the start.

Kudos for embracing the future and computing for the rest of us. Omni has the talent to make at least one killer app for iPad thus justifying its purchase alone.  Remember how the Mac made boring tasks fun? iPad with the help of talented developers will make those tasks so engaging you can't take your hands (fingers) off them!

This is great news, but I think that the lack of multi-tasking on the iPad presents both a problem for everyday users of these apps (like me) and an incredible opportunity for Omni to really exploit this platform.

I am a doctoral student and I have relied on OmniOutliner Pro, OmniGraffle and OmniGraphSketcher as the perfect set of tools for taking notes in class, ever since my undergrad days. While in class, I type text notes in OmniOutliner while I simultaneously create and add the graphs, charts, sketches and flowcharts that most professors like to add to slides or write on the chalkboard. This works reasonably well, but I think it is not an ideal model for the iPad since it will only allow me to work in one application at a time.

I think the perfect iPad app would integrate these features into one amazing notetaking app. Maybe it is still OmniOutliner based, but I want to be able to add an OmniGraffle-type flowchart or a OmniGS graph without having to switch apps. (Remember, I'm still taking down the prof's notes here!) Maybe I would just draw a box in OmniOutliner and then click one of the great new contextual menus to say “This is an OmniGraphSketcher frame” and the appropriate tools would pop-up. I could add to the graph in the frame while I continue to take notes outside the frame.

Even if the design tools from OmniGraphSketcher and OmniGraffle were just a limited subset of the full-featured versions, this would be an absolutely killer app! This is how we write notes on paper and the absence of an integrated app like this explains why most students still use the ol' spiral-bound.

Oh, and one more thing—how about creating an app called OmniEquation? I want to be able to draw a math or statistics equation (or even just a symbol like Greek characters mu or alpha) and be able to quickly add it to my notes, ideally in LaTeX or at least as an image. It doesn't have to calculate…just be clean and recognizable as a formula. That would be amazing!

I would gladly pay $30 for such an app on the iPad and I think most of my classmates would as well. If Omni decides to do this, may I suggest that you ask actual college students to give you copies of their class notes from a variety of fields? I think you would see that there is a definite need for a REAL notetaking app, one that allows clean, quick input of multiple content types…and that the iPad is the perfect platform for it!

    To Darrick on Jon W…..

I would have to agree with Jon W. here. As a long-time OO user with an iPhone 3GS, I've really been disappointed, and surprised, with no OO for iPhone. After a brief spell with TaskPaper, I finally threw in the towel and use Simplenote to keep home, work and iphone all in sync. I'll certainly check OO for iPhone/Pad when it (finally) comes along….but can't say for sure I'll go back. Wonder how many others out there are like me….

I have been hoping for a release of OmniOutliner for the Iphone as well. An adaptation for the iPad means that the iPhone SDK is used. Please consider not exclusively releasing the OmniOutliner app to the iPad. OmniOutliner would be my replacement for Notes on my iPhone.

  97. CM Harrington

    01.31.10 3:56 AM

OK, so maybe I am the only dissenting opinion here (unless they've been removed)… Currently there are a lot of bugs in OGP, some of which have been there for several versions. So now you're going to allocate resources to creating a totally new version for the iPad?

Unless it's going to be primarily a consumptive app (mostly displaying already existing graffle files, not creating new ones), I can't see how an OG app would be at all useful to anyone who has needs beyond the most simplistic. A typical OGP project file I work with makes the application consume over 1GB of RAM (yes, I have complex files). I don't even think the iPad would be able to open it, let alone allow me to display and manipulate it.

OmniOutliner? Focus? Sure, I see that. It makes sense, and the applications are both 'simple' in terms of what they do, but OGP is a totally different beast.

Speaking of, when is it going to get some love? Some of us have work to do.

@Ben re: Jon W and Mike Harris

If they were complaining about lack of iPhone support I might agree on some level. However, if you read their posts, they were complaining that Omni was going to focus on anything going through the App Store and wanting updates to the Mac versions. Since Omni indicated they will finish the Mac updates that are in progress, I'm not seeing a problem there. Also, getting these applications to either iPad or iPhone/iPod Touch will be a wonderful thing. I hope it ends up on both sets of devices and not just iPad, but I will take what I can get. :)

People will pay for quality.  Don't worry about having all the features in the first version, and of course, it will be different than that MacOS version.  Don't let people's misunderstanding of the iPad mess up a beautiful redesign of your products.

YES! It's great to see that some of the software publishers get the idea!

The iPad is a revolutionary device smoothing the transition from the classic desktop computing to the new wave of intuitive ubiquitous computing.

Stay tuned for breathtaking experiences as more and more software developers give up on delivering more and more (useless) features (of which typical users only use 20%) and rather concentrate on streamlining the human computer interaction.

I can't wait for your OMNI products, I'll buy all of them for the iPad.

I pad has MONO speaker ... oh my gosh what a rip off, even iphone has stereo speakers.  switch even those little speakers to mono and they sound horrible.

i ipad desparately needs the ability to view flash and java video which it does not, ... its really bad in that respect.

also the screen has huge black bars cutting off nearly 2 inches of the 10 inch display.

i also hate the fact you still cant save even a small file to ipad, if you get an attachemnt there is essentially no way to save it and use it later, you have to go to your real computer.

wost thing is, the storage size is only same as iphone and touch!  so small and the cost nearly 900 bux with the 3g and the “larger” storage.

I do really support this decision and am keen to get hold of an iPad and would obviously want my fave apps on it. However, I am also wondering 2 big things:

    1) Can you make Omnifocus take advantage of the fact that multiple people in a household are likely to use the same iPad? Some kind of synching thing needed here maybe.

    2) Can you please tell me if you plan to put better prototyping into Omnigraffle 6. It is a key requirement for me and I want to know if the next version is going to deliver it or should I look for alternative software now. I am happy to wait but would like to know the wait is worth it.

By doing this, they were in effect asking others to follow their lead by developing desktop-class applications. This call is already being answered. The Omni Group, the leading Mac development house responsible for OmniGraffle and OmniPlan, among others, has announced an immediate pause on developing their next generation of desktop software while they port their complete portfolio of applications to the iPad. Suggestion for iPad version of OmniOutliner:

Include audio recording in the app similar to Pear Note.

I use OmniOutliner to take notes in class while running Pear Note to capture the lecture. Since iPad does not multitask, this presents a problem. Building in audio recording would be a great addition to functionality and allow me to use OmniOutliner on the iPad in class.

    Thanks.

I think Apple has set itself up to create and dominate this new tablet computing industry.  Yes, I know this seems obvious, but I do find it funny that a while back Steve J. proclaimed Apple had no interest in developing a tablet.

OmniGraffle on iPad will be Nirvana! Please include Unicode character pickers. Unicode has lots of interesting characters I always use in my Graffles… I don't know if iPad has Edit → Special characters.

Beyond the joy of the announcement, of having these applications for the iPad, i very specially want to share my gratitude for dealing with a company that treats it's customers like adults who can make decisions.  Who shares their plans and trusts that we can hadle them properly.  I really appreciate and congratulate this business decision, which is rare to see, specially in the Apple camp.  So thanks for the apps and thanks for sharing the plans!  I'll be there when these versions come out!

    I note this with interest, as the iPad's caught the attention of the folks in the office (once purely a Windows house, until I arrived.. since then, there've been MacBook Pros, iPhones, iPod touches, and more =:) - but.. no mention of OmniWeb? Still my browser in OS X, and I'd like to see it on the iPad as well. Especially if it fixed a few of those minor, persistent bugs, like respecting the number of times an image may animate, but that's me being terminally picky. ^_^;

I just ordered my iPad!  Omnifocus and OmniPlan are the first apps that I will be looking for :). It is a 3G one, so it won’t be shipped until the end of April/beginning of May, BUT I am very excited! Thank you so much for developing for the iPad - it is going to be a work tool for me and I will be using it a great deal in meetings, presentations, etc., as I work as a DE coordinator at a university.

Way to go, Omnigroup! I will let you know how it goes ...

Here’s hoping that all the OmniApps prove that the iPad is the computer and not the peripheral device that all we hope it will be. The only reason I never bought an iPhone was the fact I use a Dell at work and to benefit from many of the iPhone apps, you have to sync your phone (as a peripheral device) to your Mac to manage the content. The iPad on the other hand has the potential to be a computer in its own right and should not need to be constantly synced to anything to be of use. The reality may be somewhat different, however the design of the apps will have a huge impact on this; if you guys can make the iPad Omni apps fully featured enough, I’ll be able to carry my iPad with me like the FiloFax/notepad/work-bible its meant to be. Here’s hoping…
