Designing Graceful, Gracious Interfaces for iPad

by Kris on April 15, 2011

If you'll pardon the horn-tooting for a moment, we'd like to take the opportunity to flatter one of our teammates. Omni's UX lead Bill recently spoke at the Voices That Matter conference here in Seattle. At last fall's VTM: iPhone Developers conference in Philly, Bill spoke about Designing Graceful, Gracious Interfaces for iPad alongside other notable tech folk. Though he didn't have as cool of a getup as this speaker, we think he put forth a valiant effort and are perfectly comfortable with calling him a hero from time to time.

In recognition of his contributions, not only to our apps, but to the ongoing dialogue about User Experience in software development, we would like to share some of Bill's thoughts with you. For those of you who couldn't attend the conference, here's his keynote presentation (paired with some audio from one of his practice sessions). If you find this sort of stuff as inspiring as we do, perhaps we should all arrange for a party-bus to the next conference - an omnibus, if you will.

Yeah thats great that he likes his job. Thanks for sharing. What would interest me even more though: what is the time table on outlined for iPad? I have no problem to wait a while for a good project but seriously….

Great video. I love the iPad interface for OmniFocus; I’d love the Mac version to look and function similarly to it.

Bill’s presentation sold another OmniFocus for iPad. Couldn’t resist something that artfully designed and well thought out.

And using the app for the first time while watching his presentation was even more enjoyable. Thanks for all the great work you guys do!

It’s very interesting to get in the head of your UI designer. Thanks for posting this.

This video reminds me of Bob Ross.

I feel iA writer could learn a lot from lesson #5 “the steering wheel zone”. In this app, the whole steering wheel zone (where our thumbs naturally fall, most easy to reach and use) is nonactive by design - one might think that this area could be at least used for scrolling, but no-o, no sir, that area is just dead.

Interesting insight into living on the cutting edge :)  As a tourist investigating reselling options (as packages for clients) this is all new to me but this was the most interesting video I’ve found - thanks!

Using OmniFocus on my iPhone for the past day has been a real pleasure, so I finally bought the Mac version—and will be buying the iPad version, once it (the iPad) arrives—and I’ve got to echo some other sentiments by saying please, please make the Mac app as functional and beautiful as the other two applications.

And, if you do, please have some mercy on a guy that just dropped $50 (I’m a college student) on the current version.  :D
