OmniOutliner General FAQ

  • Are you making an iPhone version of OmniOutliner?

We're currently focused on OmniOutliner 4 and OmniOutliner of iPad but an iPhone app is a possibility in the future. Please see this forum thread for more information and to share any thoughts you have about it. You can also email any feedback directly to us at omnioutliner@omnigroup.com.

  • Does OmniOutliner support cloning like MORE?

OmniOutliner does not support cloning currently. Please see this forum post for more information.

  • How do I expand or collapse all my notes at once?

To expand or collapse all of your notes at once, you need to be in row selection mode. You can use the escape key to toggle editing between row selection and text editing. Next, use cmd-a to select all of the visible rows. Finally, use cmd-' to toggle the visibility of your notes.

  • Can I filter my outline to only show checked or unchecked items?

Unfortunately this kind of filtering isn't possible in OmniOutliner right now. We do plan to add filtering capabilities like this in a future version.

  • Why do I have trouble sending or receiving OmniOutliner documents via email?

OmniOutliner documents are stored in a type of folder called a file wrapper. File wrappers appear to be normal files in the Finder. Apple Mail will treat file wrappers like normal files and transparently zip them when you attach them to an email. Receivers of your email who also use Apple Mail will never know that they received a zipped folder — they'll just see your OmniOutliner document. Users of other Mail programs like Gmail or Entourage will need to manually compress their OmniOutliner documents before sending them.

To compress a file, the wording is slightly different depending on which OS X version you're using, but you access it the same way. Control-click on the file through Finder and look for an option called “Compress [filename]” or “Create Archive of [filename]” which will then create a file with the same name but with a .zip extension.

  • Why do my audio recordings sound like they're playing back at half-speed?

This is due to a settings mismatch in the audio recording preferences. To correct this, open the Sound Capture preferences and then select “Custom” from the Compression drop-down menu. Now select “Options” on the panel that appears. Make sure that your output sample rate matches your input sample rate.

  • Can I style the column titles in my document?

You can apply styles to the column titles in your document by selecting the Column Titles style in the drawer. It's not currently possible to apply styles individually to column titles.

  • Can OmniOutliner import MORE files?

In general yes, but styles and images may not be preserved. If you're using an Intel Mac then you'll need to use the latest version to import your files.

  • Can OmniOutliner 3 import Keynote files?

Yes, OmniOutliner 3.8 and later can import Keynote files from any currently existing version of Keynote.

  • How can I print an outline so that it only takes up one page horizontally?

If your outline is wider than one piece of paper, the rightmost columns will be printed on a separate sheet, which you might not prefer. The easiest way to avoid this is to print a scaled version of the outline.

    1. First select Page Setup from the File menu; the Page Setup sheet appears.
    2. Choose OmniOutliner from the Settings pop-up menu.
    3. Select the checkbox labeled Scale document to fit page width. This will shrink the outline just enough to fit it onto one horizontal page.
  • Why does the Finder show my OmniOutliner file instead of my attachments when I ask them to be revealed in the Finder?

When you attach a file to an OmniOutliner document instead of linking it, the file is embedded inside of what's called a file wrapper. A file wrapper looks like a normal file in the Finder but it's actually a special kind of directory. When the Finder is asked to show something that's located inside of a file wrapper it will instead show the wrapper itself.

If you hold control when dragging an item into your outline, the item will be linked to rather than embedded in the document.

  • How can I access attachments via Applescript?

Currently Cocoa Scripting doesn't provide access to attachment innards. We may add our own support for this in a future version.

  • Why doesn't my text print at the size it's set to?

This is likely due to print scaling. Go to File > Page Setup > Settings: OmniOutliner (Pro) and uncheck 'Scale to fit page width'.

  • What should I do if I need to uninstall?

Like most Mac OS X applications, our products can be uninstalled by simply dragging the icon to the trash. However, if you're using the professional version, you'll want to also remove the clipping service that is installed. To do this, move the “OmniOutliner Professional.service” located in ~/Library/Services/ to the trash. Once that is done, empty the trash and application is now gone from your computer.

Licensing

  • Help! I upgraded/destroyed/forgot to back up my computer and lost my license! What can I do?

Just visit the Lost Licenses page to retrieve it. If this does not work for you, please send an email to sales@omnigroup.com.

  • Why won't it accept my license?

If you purchased your license through our online store:
Both the license key and license owner must be entered exactly as it was emailed to you. The key is linked to the owner so they both must match exactly to be accepted by the application. The license key should be a 23-character long string and does not contain numbers. If you need your license key sent to you again, you can use the Lost Licenses page to retrieve it. If you are still having trouble, please send an email to sales@omnigroup.com.

If you purchased a retail boxed copy:
Please double check you entered the license key exactly as given to you. The license key should be a 23-character long string in the format of XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXX and does not contain numbers. If you are still having trouble, please send an email to sales@omnigroup.com. It is also recommended you register your license key with us so we can send it to you if you happen to misplace it.

  • I bought one of your products through the Mac App Store; when I launch it, it asks for a license code. What should I do?

One of the advantages of the Mac App Store is that the products you buy there don’t require license codes. Instead, your iTunes account information is used to unlock the products you buy there.

If your Omni application is asking for a license code, it’s usually because a trial copy of the application downloaded from our website is being run instead of the Mac App Store edition.

The easiest thing to do in this case is a Spotlight search of the entire Mac for the product name. Use the results to find and launch each copy of the app on your Mac one by one. If a copy asks for a license, quit it, then move it to the Trash. Copies installed via the Mac App Store won’t do this.

If, at the end of this process, all the copies are in the Trash, you can use the “Purchases” tab in the Mac App Store to download a new copy of the product. Once the Mac App Store edition is installed, you won’t be asked for the license info on launch.

Download

OmniOutliner 3 is a paid upgrade from OmniOutliner 2.x. License codes for earlier versions of the software will not work with OmniOutliner 3 or OmniOutliner Professional 3. This is a free update for all owners of version 3.

The app will run as a fully functional trial for 14 days without a license. Also available for purchase on the Mac App Store. Requires Mac OS X 10.4.8 or later to run.
