OmniGraphSketcher for iPad 1.5

Released August 29 2011 — Requires iPad running iPhone OS 4.2.1 or later

OmniGraphSketcher for iPad 1.5 introduces more powerful ways to visualize your data and ideas. Logarithmic axes let you focus on multiples of change with all of the flexibility and customizability you’d expect in OmniGraphSketcher. New support for double precision, scientific notation, and significant digits now allows you to make accurate, readable graphs spanning hundreds of orders of magnitude. We’ve also made many improvements to graph editing, document browsing, and the inspector. Read on for details.

Logarithmic Axes

  • Lin-Log and Log-Log: OmniGraphSketcher for iPad now supports logarithmic scales on either or both axes. Simply select the axis you wish to adjust and open the inspector to switch between linear and logarithmic options. Dragging, nudging, snapping, sketch recognition, axis manipulation, importing, exporting, scale-to-fit, etc. have all been updated to work as you’d expect.
  • Double precision: To accommodate data sets that span many orders of magnitude, axes and data points now support up to 13 significant digits, and they can hold values as large as 10300.
  • Flexible: OmniGraphSketcher’s logarithmic axes support any range of values (they do not need to begin and end at powers of 10). The only exception is that the number zero is mathematically impossible on a logarithmic scale, so the min/max values must be both more than zero or both less than zero. OmniGraphSketcher will automatically fix any such issues when switching to a logarithmic axis and will prevent you from accidentally setting parameters that are mathematically undefined.
  • Line interpolation: Lines in OmniGraphSketcher connect two or more data points as smoothly as possible. That means when you switch between linear and logarithmic scales, intermediate points on the line do not necessarily represent the same values. To accurately maintain the shape of a line, tap and hold on it, then choose “Interpolate.” This will sample along the vertical grid lines (x-values). All of those samples will maintain their position, allowing you to see how each part of the shape adjusts between linear and logarithmic space. For example, an interpolated straight line in linear space becomes an exponential curve in logarithmic space.

Tick Labels

  • Scientific notation: Both linear and logarithmic axes now automatically use scientific notation (“1.23 x 1045”) when values get very large or very small. On logarithmic scales, simplified powers of ten are used when possible (“109”). You can edit these values or enter new data points by using the shortened “E” notation: “1.23E45” or “6E-7”. There are also new controls in the inspector to let you override the automatic scientific notation settings.
  • Smarter label spacing: When there is not enough room to label every tick mark, tick labels are now always evenly spaced (skipping tick marks in multiples of two, five, or ten). On logarithmic axes, tick marks representing powers of ten are most likely to be labeled.
  • Major/minor tick marks: Where there are at least 5 tick marks between tick labels, OmniGraphSketcher now automatically uses longer and shorter tick marks to distinguish between labeled ticks (long) and unlabeled ticks (short). Thanks to these improvements, automatic tick spacing is now 1 in more cases, allowing more easily understandable scales.
  • Significant digits: Tick labels (and everything else in the app that displays numeric data values) now choose an appropriate number of significant digits based on the axis ranges. For example, an axis spanning 0 to 100 will display up to four significant digits (“1.234” or “93.47”); whereas an axis spanning 842 to 843 will use up to six significant digits (“842.551”). This is just for display; all data points are stored with full precision.

Document Picker

  • You can now sort documents by date or by name.
  • You can quickly scan through your documents using the new scrubber bar at the bottom of the screen.
  • A new button in the Import popover lets you retrieve any of the sample documents that came with OmniGraphSketcher.

Miscellaneous

  • The inspector popover has a new lighter-colored look, and it scrolls to reveal more controls.
  • You can now snap text labels onto points.
  • The return key now confirms new values in tick labels instead of inserting a carriage return.
  • Bold, italic, and underline buttons now work as expected when multiple text labels are selected.
  • A single tap inside the text editor now automatically positions the cursor at the beginning or end of words, and a triple tap selects the whole paragraph.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented the text editor from accepting Korean characters.
  • Accidental new labels now disappear if you do not edit the default “Label” text.
  • OmniGraphSketcher now uses the faster hardware-accelerated screen sharing available on iPad 2.
  • Grid lines now adjust to the nearest pixel so that they look sharper on-screen.
  • When importing data, OmniGraphSketcher now chooses even better automatic axis ranges.
  • Graph margins now take into account any arrowheads on the ends of axes.
  • Lines with straight segments at sharp angles now have gentler, rounded joints.
  • Smaller fixes and improvements.

  • Smaller fixes and improvements.

OmniGraphSketcher for iPad 1.3

Released October 01 2010 — Requires iPad running iPhone OS 3.2 or later

OmniGraphSketcher for iPad 1.3 is a significant update which greatly improves axis manipulation, allowing direct control of both the axis range and tick spacing via dragging on the canvas. Other additions include the ability to select multiple objects at once, and to copy and paste any graph object. We've improved accuracy when selecting, addressed crashing at high zoom levels, and fixed problems with importing and saving reported by our users.

  • Axis Manipulation
    • When you select an axis, several handles now appear that let you adjust axis properties. The handles at the ends of the axis let you change the axis range, either by dragging them or by tapping and typing numeric values. And you can change the spacing between tick marks by dragging the handle that appears above the first tick mark.
    • Drag with one finger anywhere on an axis to rescale the axis range. (The axis end closest to your finger will update as you drag.) Alternatively, drag any axis tick label.
    • Drag with two fingers on an axis to "pan" the range.
    • If you delete an axis title, you can get it back by tapping the axis twice and choosing Show Axis Title from the menu.
  • Selecting and Editing
    • Added support for copying and pasting any graph object.
    • Added ability to Redo changes via a press and hold on the Undo button.
    • You can now select multiple objects by holding a finger down on the first one while tapping others to add or remove them from the selection. You can also drag from unoccupied space on the graph background to select all objects in a rectangular area.
    • Snap text labels to lines and points by dragging. Once a label is snapped, drag it again to adjust its position relative to the object it's snapped to.
    • New "Detach" menu item in the contextual edit menu lets you separate points which have been snapped together.
    • Improved accuracy when selecting points, lines, and axes, especially when they are overlapping or very close to each other.
    • Improved functionality when editing text labels.
    • You can now use the inspector to manually set the lower-left x- and y-position of lines, fills, and groups of objects.
    • Improved visual feedback when snapping points and labels onto other objects.
    • Fixed an issue where points snapped together would no longer snap to the grid or other objects.
    • Improved the appearance and behavior of text overlays that display zoom scales and positions of points being dragged.
    • Once an object is selected, you can now drag it immediately (it no longer requires a split-second pause).
  • Miscellaneous
    • You can now rename documents by tapping the document's title either in the document browser or in the main toolbar.
    • Fixed an issue with the data importer so that it now correctly imports data in locales that use a half-space as the thousands separator.
    • Fixed an issue where some bold fonts did not get saved.
    • Improved stability of the app when zoomed in all the way.
    • Many smaller fixes and improvements.

OmniGraphSketcher for iPad 1.1

Released April 15 2010 — Requires iPad running iPhone OS 3.2 or later

OmniGraphSketcher for iPad 1.1 is a significant update which focuses on adding data import capability and improving the user experience. Now that we've had time to use OmniGraphSketcher on actual iPads, we've adjusted the draw and fill tools to make graphing even easier and faster, and we've fixed issues affecting the document browser, graph editor, and info popovers. We've also had a chance to implement the data importing feature that is available in OmniGraphSketcher for Mac.

Data Import

  • OmniGraphSketcher for iPad can now import data via copy and paste from iWork Numbers, text files (comma- and tab-delimited), and web pages (text or tables). For performance reasons, import is limited to 500 data points.
  • Imported points are grouped and connected with a line by default. To remove the line, tap it twice to sub-select it, then tap again to get the Edit menu with a "Delete" option.
  • Guidelines for formatting data for import are the same as for OmniGraphSketcher on the Mac. For more information on Importing, please see the new "Importing Data" Help Topic.

Draw and Fill tools

  • Draw and Fill are now "single-use"; you don't have to press done when finished.
  • A drawn object is now automatically selected, allowing you to style it using the info popover much more easily. The net result of these two improvements is much faster graph creation in most situations.
  • When drawing a fill, the wide preview is now shown until the fill extends past a line or axis.

Graph manipulation

  • Double-tapping to enter text editing is much more reliable.
  • It's now easier to zoom the graph to fit the iPad screen.
  • Now when you touch and hold on a group of selected objects (to bring up the edit menu), the whole selection is preserved.
  • Added Lock and Unlock options to the contextual Edit menu.
  • Added a Connect option to the Edit menu when the selection contains a group of points. This command connects the selected points using the default line style.
  • Fixed an issue where toolbar buttons could disappear after quickly double-tapping them.
  • Improved application performance when editing text labels.

Info Popover

  • Popovers are no longer dismissed by slight movement of the device.
  • Popover controls have been re-ordered for clarity.
  • The default set of color swatches for fills now includes semi-transparent colors.
  • The default set of color swatches for canvas now includes more appropriate colors.
  • Improved the image for the "Tick Mark" point type.
  • The minimum grid line width is now 0.5 pixels.

File Browser

  • Document previews are now closer together so that neighboring graphs are always visible.
  • Animations when opening, closing, duplicating and deleting documents are smoother.
  • Fixed an issue where document previews were sometimes missing.
  • Delete button now spawns a popover instead of an alert.

Export

  • Added a "Copy as Image" item to the action menu that sends an image of the selected graph to the clipboard. You can then paste the image into applications such as Pages and Keynote. When supported by the target application, the pasted image is a scalable PDF.

Updated Help and Welcome document.

Smaller fixes and improvements.
