OmniGraffle for iPad FAQ

  • What does it cost?

    OmniGraffle for iPad is $49.99.

  • Can I use OmniGraffle for iPad with existing documents I've made with OmniGraffle for Mac?

OmniGraffle for iPad can open and edit documents created by OmniGraffle for Mac, though performance may vary depending on document size and complexity. We're working to optimize the iPad version for the smaller amount of RAM available on the device; if you have sample documents or stencils you'd like us to include in our optimizations, please send them to us!

  • Is there a discount if I buy OmniGraffle for Mac and OmniGraffle for iPad?

OmniGraffle for Mac and OmniGraffle for iPad are separate products, with lots of independent work going into each one. We're generally quite happy to offer bundle pricing for products purchased through our own online store, but there's no way to do that when selling through the App Store. We've tried to make sure that each product is priced reasonably as its own independent product, and we hope you'll agree that both products become even more valuable when you use them together.

  • If I have more than one iPad, how many copies of OmniGraffle for iPad do I need?

Just one; similar to music or iPod game purchases, one license covers any device you personally use and control, up to a limit of five devices. Note that this is determined by the App Store Terms and Conditions.

  • Do I have to pay for future updates?

The App Store policy and the longstanding Omni Group policy agree: minor updates should be free. Of course, if there is a major overhaul of the application with lots of shiny new features, we may release it as a new product, and that would cost money. But bug fixes, minor features, and miscellaneous polishing come at no cost.

  • How do I update OmniGraffle for iPad?

You can update OmniGraffle for iPad from within the App Store on your iPad or by logging into your account in the iTunes Store on your desktop and syncing to iTunes once it has downloaded the update.

  • Can I use existing third-party stencils with OmniGraffle for iPad?

OmniGraffle for iPad should be able to open and handle most third-party and custom stencils; the simplest way to move them over is to transfer them through iTunes. Not all stencils may work optimally with OmniGraffle for iPad due to hardware and memory constraints of the device itself.

  • How do I transfer stencils from OmniGraffle for Mac to OmniGraffle for iPad?

There are currently four ways to get an OmniGraffle file (including stencils) from the desktop to the iPad:

    • Email your stencil to an account that's active in Mail on the iPad.

    • Download them from the web.

    • In OmniGraffle for iPad, search and download from Graffletopia in the Stencils popover.

    • In iTunes, plug in your iPad and select it in the sidebar in the Devices section. Next, choose the Apps tab. After that, select OmniGraffle for iPad in the Apps list followed by theAdd… button. Browse to add your diagram or stencil.

That said, there are some important caveats to be aware of:

    • When emailing or downloading from the web, ensure that the files have the proper OmniGraffle file extension (sillyfilename.graffle, sillyfilename.gstencil, etc.). If the files are zipped up, they should be named sillyfilename.graffle.zip, etc.

    • Stencils will automatically show in the Stencils popover and, as of version 1.4, they will also show in the Document Browser for purposes of editing and deletion. Tap the title of the Document Browser toolbar to switch to the Stencil Browser where you can edit, delete, and create new stencils.

    Some overall best practices:

    • Compressed files (from within the Document Inspector on the desktop version of OmniGraffle) work out better due to space considerations on the iPad.

    • Adding a Quick Look preview helps out when browsing documents in OmniGraffle for iPad.

    • There isn't a provision for establishing a folder hierarchy for stencils on the iPad as of yet, however, you can edit your stencils on the desktop to combine multiple files into a multiple canvas stencil that's only one document.

  • Do you support automatic sync of OmniGraffle documents between Macs and iPads?

We’re adding automatic document sync to the Mac and iOS editions of OmniGraffle and our other document-based apps. Like the sync solutions we’ve delivered in OmniFocus and OmniPlan, it’ll be based on open technologies rather than ones tied to a specific vendor.

  • Will more features be coming to OmniGraffle for iPad?

Yes! Now that there's more time to do so, we are planning on introducing useful features that are present on the desktop version to take advantage of the unique user experience on the iPad. Please feel free to send feedback on what you'd like to see in future releases!
