From mrhatken at mac.com Sun Apr 1 19:13:42 2007 From: mrhatken at mac.com (Ashley Aitken) Date: Sun Apr 1 19:08:31 2007 Subject: Anyone know about 4D Web applications? Message-ID: Howdy All, I've used a number of Web frameworks besides WebObjects but never a 4th Dimension application that a client currently uses (4D database with desktop client) and wants to develop (4D database with Web client). I'm wondering if anyone has experience with 4D in the Web space and knows how appropriate it's architecture is for a small to medium sized Web application (i.e. not complex) with anticipated medium- level use. I would assume they would generally have only (low) tens of users concurrently accessing the system, so scaling very large is not a concern. My feeling is it will be something like the Web side of FileMaker? If 4D Web applications are a nightmare solution (i.e. they shouldn't go there) for this type of problem then I may recommend something else (although they have a long history and large investment in 4D). Sorry this is off-topic somewhat. Cheers, Ashley. -- Ashley Aitken Perth, Western Australia mrhatken at mac dot com Skype Name: MrHatken (GMT + 8 Hours!) I tried it recently and ran up against a brick wall: the version of 4D the client used had critical bugs in its JDBC implementation. There was supposedly an upgrade available, but they couldn't upgrade for some reason, and that was pretty much the death of the project. I don't know why upgrading was a problem, but it's worth investigating the possibility that 4D upgrades are difficult or expensive. So for that reason I don't have any experience actually *writing* a web app with 4D, but I'd suggest making sure that the baseline technology the database must support is available. Structure the project such that you start with a pilot app that tests whatever subset of JDBC functionality you'll need, preferably from more than once client at once, since concurrence is the sort of thing these sorts of databases fall down on. (By "these sorts", I just mean databases that weren't originally designed for Web access... 4D is fine, in my experience, for its designed use with their provided client.) I actually have lots and lots of experience in this area, producing several large web sites with 4D and writing dozens of 4D applications over the last 15 years. I'd be happy to chat to you about some approaches I'd suggest. These are hybrid 4D/WebObjects projects: http://www.ish.com.au/ solutions/case_studies/community_colleges Feel free to give me a call... The date will be June 10th, starting at 09am, to 06pm. Still looking at some places to hold the meeting, but good chance that it will be done at Marriott San Francisco (just next of Moscone Center). The sessions description are not 100% done, but it should be : - Introduction to Eclipse for WO dudes - Migration from XCode to WOLips - WO/EOF best pratices panel - Direct2Web - AJAX - XML and Web Services - Wonder best features Please note that it will be all on WO 5.3 and Tiger, Leopard or any new release of WO will not be discussed. We will try to record the sessions so that people can buy them online later on. Pricing should be around $200 USD, including breakfast, lunch and two breaks. I'm also trying to get a community gathering on Friday June 15th afternoon so that people who attend WWDC can discuss what's they hear in WWDC sessions, we just need to find some people to do it (Moscone people don't want us to rent a room). So, please update or add your profile to the WOWODC page if you plan to attend the WOWODC sessions on June 10th. This is important because we need to tell the Marriott how much capacity we need. If you already added your profile on the signup page, and you don't want to attend (or want to buy the recorded sessions), please update your profile to say so. http://www.gvcsitemaker.com/wowodc.2007/sign_up See you June 10th !
