Well, originally it was hard because .pac files were JavaScript and  
we didn't have JavaScript when we wrote our original proxy  
implementation (in OmniWeb 2.0?).

But once we added support for JavaScript (in 4.0?), it wouldn't have  
been particularly difficult--it was just always a lower priority than  
other things in our work load (such as improving our CSS and  
JavaScript DOM and plug-in support).

But perhaps there's a light at the end of that tunnel:  do .pac files  
work in Safari?  If so, they I would expect them to also work in  
OmniWeb 5.5, which is now based on WebKit.  We haven't shipped 5.5  
yet (obviously), but you can test the latest "sneaky peek" build by  
visiting this web page:

Let us know if it works!  (The other obstacle to implementing .pac  
support was simply the lack of a good test case here at Omni.)
