Bookmark synchronization

My bookmarks routinely get messed up: usually it loses things I put 
there.

It looks as if the synch algorithm, when it wants to know whether to 
update from the repo or update to it, merely guesses.

Is there a well-defined algorithm being used?

Anyone else have this problem?

(Three machines are involved.  One is always in the same place and has 
a public domain name.  One is a roving laptop.  One is behind a LAN 
firewall.  If it helps.)
