That's exactly my point - you can only use one workspace, which means 
you can't really use workspaces.

Wow, it sounds like you are using some bad IDEs.  I do most of my core 
development in emacs, but I do use Xcode for objective-C stuff and I 
can assure you that it does allow you to open multiple projects.  I 
can't imagine that any serious IDE would restrict you to one project at 
a time.

  Almost every useful piece of software on the mac lets you open more 
than one project/document at a time.   I couldn't imagine omnigraffle, 
for example, closing out the document I'm working on just because I've 
switched to another one.  How dumb would that be?
