Jon,
---- VIM ----
VIM is a devil to learn but paradise itself once acquired. It is a
smallish full screen editor (although line-oriented) that allows the adept
to do everything without moving her fingers from the central 'rest'
position on the keyboard (altho' you may need to reach for the Escape key,
depending on where that is located on your keyboard).
This is just a delight: after twenty years of reaching for the mouse,
interrupting typing flow, and distorting the anatomy of my right shoulder
I'm starting to *love* the hands-on position.
The standard OS X distribution includes VIM. I suspect that it could be
hacked as a sort of plug-in for COCOA programs -- but then, I'm so used to
seeing such wonderfully clever hacks that I now tend to think that's true
of anything.
What it would mean for the OW interface is a supremely capable editor
_transparently_ placed in the text-field editor without the ugly buttons
and gewgaws of embedded editors such as FCK. I guess you'd have to have a
preference for turning it on or off. I edit my TXP site in BBEdit and copy
the text into the text area using an Applescript. But with VIM in the edit
areas, I'd be happier still working in OW.
Off-list, Karyn warned me that I'd never convince OW users to struggle
with the VIM key-set. She's right, of course: with editors it works for
you or you hate it. But I have to point out that we're ALREADY using a
small part of the VIM set: the activation key for incremental search "/"
is the VIM key for activating search.
------ Keyboard equivalents of CMD+Click -----
As far as I can tell, the keyboard shortcut list contained in the Help
menu of OW merely confirms that there is NO keyboard-only equivalent of
CMD+Click to open a link in a new tab/ background tab. You have to use the
mouse.
Best wishes,
Peter
