I also think the 'hacked together' version looks clearer/better. The 
larger icons don't really eat much more vertical space (and 
horizontally, it's not a problem, either) but give clearer info. The 
zebra-theme helps keeping on the right line with the eye, so that's 
good, too.

Btw.: This look, could it also be applied for viewing FTP-directories? 
The way FTP is displayed now, it looks a tad out of date... ;-) (I 
guess not much work has gone into the FTP part for some time, eh?)
