"™" in OmniGroup bookmark names

Clicking on "The Omni Group" menu in my favorites bar displays all of the 
Omni product names with an "™" suffix.  Recalling that these names 
used to have a tiny "TM" suffix, I thought that I'd found a bug in 
OmniWeb 4.1b1.

However, I see the same "™" display in several earlier releases of 
OmniWeb, all the way back to 4.0.5.  So it's clear that something has 
happened to my bookmark file.

When I first tried editing the OmniWeb bookmark name, I was unable to 
replace "™" with "TM".  I could type an Option-2 and get the "TM" 
symbol, but as soon as I clicked in another field, it changed back to 
"™".  So I tried a bullet character (Option-8) instead -- that 
worked.  Then I tried Option-2 again -- it worked!!!  Option-2 now works 
most of the time.  However, sometimes I have to try a couple of times.

Can anyone explain what's happening here?
