If you highlight the process it will show status, etc in the lower part of the window.  I would say that I prefer IE's Download Manager.  The current process window works great for the other processes that occur, like HTML pages and graphics, but I think downloads (download processes that aren't part of a page download process) should have a separate window or status information immediately visible somehow.
