It was a theoretical situation. Sorry for not being more precise.

Well, chances are you could get the tools from somewhere. Both IE and
Netscape as well as most FTP programs can decode the .bin file. I don't see
what the catch 22 is. Once you have a utility, any utility, it's not a
problem... And I won't get into a discussion on the advantages and
disadvantages resource/data forks. Type/creator has nothing to do with it.

Chances are that if you have downloaded the file you have a tool to
decompress it....
