Window sizing

What is the magic combination that sets the window size when opening a new  
URL? It seems somehow tied to the window size that the first window created  
after launching the application. And if that happens to be something unusual,  
every window that opens from then on has to be resized manually, a real  
obnoxious annoyance. It seems to last at one size for a few dayes, and then I  
do something one day and from then on it's something different. How do I  
control this?
