I attempted to use this:

<TABLE BORDER=0 CELLPADDING=5 ALIGN=center>

in order to center a table on the page (the entire table)

This is, AFAIK, legit HTML code.  Unfortunately the only browser I have to  
double check is LYNX.

It did center in Lynx.

I checked the OW3 Release Notes page and didn't see anything about this.



Then I saw this:

	"Some browsers (in particular, all versions of Netscape)
	do not honor the ALIGN attribute on a table. For these
	browsers, enclose the entire table in a CENTER or <DIV
	ALIGN=CENTER> tag."

Well, <center> </center> didn't work, but <DIV... > did

Ironically, the site  
(http://www.math.uni-goettingen.de/hangleit/html/block/div.html) also said:

	"Instead of <DIV ALIGN=CENTER>, use CENTER. This element
	is more widely supported at the moment, even though HTML
	3.2 defines both as identical. "

Anyway, there should be 3 different ways to do this, but it seems that only  
one of them works.

I didn't even know of DIV before that site (which has the full 3.2 HTML spec)

We plan to release beta 9 for Windows when we release it for Mac OS  
X Server and OPENSTEP/Mach, which should be sometime in the next  
month or so.

There have been a number of major changes to OmniWeb since beta 8  
(the most notable being support for JavaScript and HTTP 1.1), and  
unfortunately those new features are still fairly unstable so we're  
not in a position to release beta 9 just yet.  I plan to stamp out  
those problems as soon as I get a chance (and then release beta 9),  
but right now all my engineering time is going towards our new  
OmniBackup product.

  Alan (and anyone else that is interested),

  I just wanted to let you know that I have (finally) added the feature you  
requested and it will be available in beta-9.  I've also modified the openURL  
source so that you can pass a '-d' flag and it will use the DO approach  
rather than the Services approach.

  The API that OmniWeb currently provides includes the following.  This is  
obviously not an exhaustive API, but it satisfies the feature request and  
then some.  We will most likely add more API in the future.

  Also, here is the updated source for openURL that shows how to use the API  
to open a given URL:

Hi -

I have some questions about OmniWeb. I'm on Mach 4.2/x86.

The first is related to the really annoying 'gray screen of death'.
I've observed that it happens more often when I rapidly open/close
document windows, and it seems to be related to some release/autorelease
race condition. I've read somewhere that OS4.2 and Rhapsody differ in
some subtle aspects like freeing sub- and superviews; this might be
the reason that the bug doesn't seem to happen on Rhapsody
Is there any chance that the next version of OmniWeb will take care
of this? I realize that patching around OS4.2 misbehaviour is
not a really good way to spend one's time these days, but the sad
reality is that this bug alone makes OmniWeb a whole lot less
useful. I regularly use several documents at the same time for
'real work' and constantly shutting down/restarting OW is very
counterproductive. Not to mention the memory leaks..

Another thing is more of an HTML question: if you visit
http://www.objectshare.com/vwnc/ you'll see an empty white
page. A <style> tag is followed by an unclosed HTML comment,
effectively rendering the end of the style tag useless; this results
in quite a lack of style. I have all Netscape comaptibility options
checked, but that doesn't seem to make any difference.
Should I bug their webmaster about broken HTML?

Finally, my last question is about how Omni sees the future of OW
in immediate and short term. It's the best thing we have until OSX
hits the street, but it's getting harder every day to use it
productively, simply because of apparent incompatibilities, slow
performance (which is really DPS'/AppKit fault), lack of Java
(which is not OW's fault either), etc. I've thought about using
Netscape on Linux via Cub'X, but don't really like this idea - if only
for the lack of working cut & paste.

That definitely seems to be the case.  Basically, the view seems to  
be getting deallocated right after it's placed into the scrollview  
(and I'd really expect it to be retained by _someone_ at that point).

I expect so.

It's the top priority for the next release.  Actually, the gray  
screen problem seemed to disappear for a while internally (or at  
least happen much less frequently), but I suspect that was just due  
to some interaction with JavaScript--we certainly haven't actually  
fixed the problem directly yet.

Well, I always recommend to anyone that they complain to webmasters  
about broken HTML, but we'll also try to fix our style tag processing  
so that if it's unmatched it doesn't make the entire remainder of  
the file disappear.

We hope it'll be the best thing we have after OSX hits the streets,  
too!  I'm certainly looking forward to shipping OmniWeb on both  
mainstream end-user operating systems.

OS X will help the performance (goodbye DPS) and includes support  
for Java.  In your short list, that does leave the apparent  
incompatibilities--I guess we'll just have to continue to work on  
those.

(The incompatibilities which have bothered us most recently are when  
we're authoring web sites:  we find that the other browsers have a  
lot of HTML-rendering bugs which OmniWeb doesn't, which means that we  
have to make sure we test our web sites in the other browsers too.   
Mind you, we do still have our own areas of rendering which really  
need work, such as support for percentage widths in table cells.)

Those two plug-ins were built for previous versions of OmniWeb, and  
are incompatible with the current release.  You can find an updated  
HTTPS.plugin somewhere on the net (check StepWise for pointers), but  
I'm afraid that somewhere along the line we broke the JavaApplet  
plug-in and haven't gotten around to fixing it yet.

I decided that I should elaborate on this a bit more:

The reason we haven't really worked on the JavaApplet plug-in is  
because Apple completely revamped the Java support immediately  
following DR2 (adding support for Java Beans in InterfaceBuilder,  
etc.), and we decided it wasn't worth trying to fix the old  
hacked-together Java support when it will be so much easier to do in  
the final X Server release.

I don't think that it is a good idea for OmniWeb to use the user's email  
address as anonymous FTP password.
There are too many sites which collect email addresses through anonymous FTP logs.
Is there a way to make OmniWeb stop doing that?
BTW: AnonymousFTPPassword default does not seem to do anything...

I'm doing some perl/cgi scripting and have found that OmniWeb 3.0b8b  
does not return linebreaks from within a  
<form><textarea>...</textarea> in a way that is consistent with  
either NN or MSIE.  A file that is generated simply by printing to a  
file the text returned from OW between the textarea tags results in a  
file which is one long line regardless of the original linebreaks.   
NN and MSIE preserve new lines.

I realise that it would be possible to write code that detects the  
browser type and determines whether or not to do the appropriate  
substitutions of line feeds and carriage returns, but it would be  
better imho to make the browser behave the same as those other  
browsers in this respect.

I suspect:

As many other I noticed the license expiration of OW3b8 today
(31.1). --- and a new bug:

You should definitly make it possible to request a new license
key, or to access the omnigroup server with the expired version.
Or at least still allow access to your own homepage.
I had to reactivate an old OW2 version to do this!!

Now that's a good idea.  You might even (if you haven't already)  
automatically open up to www.omnigroup.com if the app is started and not

Whenever I load a site that uses a cgi script, and the site contains
client-side image maps, OmniWeb 3b8 decides to download the URL an
extra time for each image map. This is causing data to get posted
over and over.

Apparently Omniweb is ignoring meta tags in the Header, in particular those which tell the browser which character set is being used in the page. For example, at:

http://www.cet.middlebury.edu/Smitheram/ZhouXuan/seasons.html


the header includes the meta tag:

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8">

Both netscape and IE correctly parse that tag and switch the encoding for the display of the page (using any available Japanese/Chinese or Unicode fonts (depending upon the platform).

In Omniweb, not only does it ignore the tag, but switching the encoding is several steps--the user would have to know to open the User Preferences, and then to click HTML Display, and then know which character encoding to select. At the very least, I
would recommend that the encoding switch be available directly as a menu selection rather than having to go through a dialog, but of course the best would be for Omniweb to understand the meta tags. (Chinese and Japanese users routinely have to switch
among various encodings when browsing so direct menu access would be nice).

I had previously sent a message to this list reporting a bug with  
newlines in textareas using OmniWeb, but I've now looked a bit more at the  
problem and realize that the problem actually lies in the way that hidden  
parameters are handled by OW.

Specifically, newline characters are lost from text strings that are  
passed as hidden cgi parameters.

A perl script to demonstrate this effect is shown below.  You can try  
this script out at http://grimpeur.tamu.edu/cgi-bin/hiddenbug.cgi

(Press the reload button to see what happens to the parameters passed in  
the different ways - Netscape will preserve the multiline formatting with  
both methods; OmniWeb turns the input into one line when passed as a  
hidden parameter.)

Looks like a bug that should be fixed, but if anyone can suggest a good  
workaround in the interim, please let me know.

This isn't specific to hidden cgi parameters, newlines are stripped  
from all tag attribute values.

This was done to be compatible with Netscape 2.0, where one could  
say (and many did say) something like:

	<a href="http://www.omni
	group.com/">

(ignore the indentation) and have the value of that anchor's href be  
"http://www.omnigroup.com/" with no whitespace where the newline had  
been.

I hated writing the code to strip out those newlines (SGML would  
actually have us replace those line breaks with whitespace), but it  
sure fixed a lot of web pages in that time frame.

So, I take it you're saying that Netscape 4.0 no longer does this?

The best thing to do would be to encode those newlines as character  
entities:  according to HTML 4.0  
(http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/types.html#type-cdata,

	User agents should interpret attribute values as follows:
	- Replace character entities with characters,
	- Ignore line feeds,
	- Replace each carriage return or tab with a single space.
	  line breaks should be interpreted as a single space.

(These rules are actually part of the SGML specification, ISO 8879  
section 7.9.3.)

Since you actually want the line breaks in your attribute value to  
be preserved, not replaced with spaces, you should encode them as the  
carriage return character entity, "&#13;".

www.etrade.com home page.  Don't know if it helps, but i just noted the

Another possible data point... i'm fairly sure that i was able to access
the etrade home page with _a_ 3-beta initially, but then it somewhat
mysteriously quit working... the only difference being that i
re-downloaded and re-installed OmniWeb on my system.  The reason for doing
that was that the 3-beta copy i had been using was failing to run
because of the date/licensing problem, and i hadn't discovered the new
license key you were providing in your web pages... so i (densely) assumed
that maybe i could just download a fresh copy and cruise with that.  I had
already blown away my system copy, as well as the original .pkg.tar.gz.

So perhaps there was some bug introduced in recent days/weeks/... in the
beta releases that you put out(?). 

Thanks again for looking into this.  Are you able to reproduce the
failure?

So: there is a bug (one user could have a misconfigured installation,
but two users ....)

Is there any additional debug mode, or a way on how we could help you
in triggering the bug?

Hm, then however: I tried to do a telnet connection to the server,
and the redirected URL just gives me ..... nothing. The server closes
the connection without any response. Probably a bug on their side, too?
Or maybe they are trying to do some sort of authentication by ident or
something else? I'm behind a firewall so user authentication wouldn't work.
I'd guess Ken is working directly with the web, but probably the bug
reporting person also resides behind a firewall or at least a proxy.

not to show too much pessimism, but how about the creation of
a new mailinglist: omniweb-bugs :-)

I understand that you don't want bug reports see widespread
because probably often there are no bugs. But in the case of
a bug which isn't directly traceable, maybe someone else does
have a tip or idea, why a special circumstance might cause this
bug, and therefore the people at OmniGroup get more ideas.

Pull up the OmniWeb Console (Tools->Show Console), click on "Show  
HTTP Requests", click on the broom to clear out the current messages,  
then try loading the URL which causes problems.

(After you do this, you'll probably want to click on "Show HTTP  
Requests" again to turn it back off.)

I'm using OmniWeb 3.0beta-8b on a Cube but?

I can't get "Yahoo search engine" to display the result of its search in the Search Panel window.

To add yahoo to my Search Panel, I did the following:
1/ I drag and drop the URL of Yahoo search results onto the Search Panel : http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=
2/ I launched the Document Inspector. It shows : type:"source expired" and "No Server Support".  After refreshing the Document Inspector,  the expiration date was set to the actual date, hour and minute. 
3/ There was no Result Parsing in the Search Site Inspector. So, I had the following:

It depends.

Do you want the fastest performance possible or do you want all the possible  
features?

2.5 is probably the fastest, but 3.x has more features.

You can install at /LocalApps and use as any users

Yes, 2 or 3 frameworks.... but I believe it is pretty straightforward what  
is required if you go to OmniWeb's homepage.....

I believe they are .pkg files, which you will want to gunzip and then 'gnutar vxf'

I can't get the URL of "Yahoo search engine" to display the result of its search in the Search Panel window.

I try to add the URL as mention in the Help (OW2 help):

IF I drag and drop the URL of Yahoo search results onto the Search Panel : http://search.yahoo.com/search?p= Then,the Document Inspector display this: type:"source expired" and "No Server Support".  
After refreshing the Document Inspector,  the new expiration date is set to the actual date, hour and minute. How does the process of expiration work with the server's engine? what is the easiest way to set up a Server-supported URL? 

There was no "automatic" Result Parsing in the Yahoo's Search Site Inspector. So, I had to add manually:

Title:Yahoo!
URL:http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=
Image:http://us.yimg.com/images/yahoo.gif
Begin After: Yahoo! Category Matches
End Before: Next 20 Matches

But this is not sufficient to get it to display the result into the Search Panel Window. Am I missing something?

Apple decided they'd rather see OmniGroup Backup (Ken rejected my original  
idea of "BackupMonster") than OmniWeb, so we're working on that.

As SOON as it gets out the door, Ken and I are going to take a week and  
polish up OmniWeb and ship it.  The internal version is months and months  
ahead of what we've released.

Biggest priorites are Java and our beta JavaScript. The latter will be a  
work-in-progress for a while, but we should be able to release a decent beta  
of it when OmniWeb 3.0 ships for real.  Barring unforeseen Java wackiness,  
Java should "just work" once we switch to the new APIs from the pre-DR2 APIs.

Wil was referring to the Java APIs, which changed between Rhapsody  
DR2 and Mac OS X Server.  We will release OmniWeb 3.0 final for  
OPENSTEP 4.2, and the only difference between the release for  
OPENSTEP and the one for X Server is that the OPENSTEP version won't  
support Java.

And IIRC that's because MacOSX has far greater kernel(?) support
or something that makes it much easier to do Java on MacOSX rather
than OpenStep (rather than OmniG. just deciding not to support java
for OpenStep)

	Not wanting to speak for Omni, but I thinks its because OS X Server  
actually HAS Java, so Omni didn't have to write it.  OpenStep on the other  
hand doesn't have it.

Basically, yes.

The big issue is that Mac OS X Server actually has a thread-safe  
application kit, which is really important for Java support (since it  
wants to be able to do stuff with the application kit--drawing,  
etc.--from multiple threads).

Making the AppKit thread-safe was a pretty large undertaking for  
Apple.  It would be a much larger undertaking for us, without AppKit  
source code.

Sigh... You can't imagine how desperately "lots of us" are waiting for  
this new version (well, at least I do :-)).

Could you provide us until then with a new license key for OmniWeb  
3.0-beta-8 because the old one expires SOON. An announcement in  
c.s.n.announce (including the new key) also might be useful.

Omniweb 3.0ba seems not to use all columns specified for a textarea.
Specifically, the last 5 spaces are left blank and items that should
fit in the allocated space are wrapped.  For an example see

Well, OmniWeb 3.0 beta 8b just expired again. It seems to expire on the
correct expiry date, but at 0h GMT, which happens to be some different
time around the world, and I wasn't expecting that, since it's not Mar 31,
1999 yet.

So, will we get a license key soon? Or a new version to download?

Ok folks, we're really sorry about this, but for various reasons we  
didn't get a new OmniWeb release out when we expected to, and now we  
have another problem: due to a miscalculation, the most recent  
OmniWeb beta license has already expired. (With the exception of the  
distribution included on the Mac OS X Server CD, which should still  
run fine.)

Beta 9 should be out this evening, but here's another OmniWeb  
license that doesn't expire for a couple more weeks. Make sure to  
enter the license information exactly as given. Note that the license  
claims to expire April 15, but it actually expires a bit earlier  
than that, depending on your location. Among other improvements, beta  
9 shouldn't have that problem.

I must have done something stupid. I downloaded beta 9 and installed it as root, removing all the old frameworks since they're now inside the app wrapper. However, beta 9 doesn't display any images even though my user prefs are set to display the images.

Not your fault, and this should be a FAQ item for beta 9:  the  
problem is that your beta 8 plug-ins (which presumably you haven't  
removed, unlike your frameworks) are disabling the built-in beta 9

Well, I should have known anyway...and in fact just was wondering about that when looking at the administrator preferences and seeing "duplicate name" in the list of the plugins there.

Here's a related question with respect to the frameworks. I deleted all the old ones, though I was aware of the web site's admonition not to delete them if other apps are using them. I did anyway because OmniPDF seems not to need them, and none of the
other Omni apps run under CR1 anyway, correct?

Hmmm. I was not able to get OmniImage to run even before I deleted the frameworks The frameworks and applications are all installed in /Network... and survived the move from DR2 to CR1 on those machines we have licenses for CR1 for since they're on an
alpha NFS server unaffected by the MacOS X stuff...

OW3.0-beta-9 is an incredible improvement over the previous version. For

New Version of OmniWeb is flying on the net. Forget about N.... This is THE  
WEB BROWSER. I'm running OW for the last hour and I can not believe it. And  
this is on a NeXT cube Dimension.

Since I heavily rely on HTTPS plugins for my professional transactions
within my university and the national computing centers, I need to make
sure I have the right before upgrading to OW3beta9.  What "bundles' 
Info-nextstep.plist" do I have to reset, since I have about a 
dozen such files associated with Omni alone?   Several of which have
the cited key "OFRequiredSoftwareVersions".

Do nothing. I was talking about bundles that you recompiled yourself
from source code.
If you need HTTPS you have to keep b8 around for now until a new
bundle is released. There is no workaround. Note that you also have
to move the existing Plugins (most probably in /LocalLibrary) into b8's
.app/Resources directory, so that they are still loaded at b8 startup.
If you don't move the old plugins aside, b9 won't work correctly.

Thus I can start bluebox and use any other browser to get the class.

Did you unpack using "tar" rather than "gnutar"?  I suspect some of  
the path names in the distribution are too long for the standard  
"tar" command.

We should be more clear about needing to use gnutar in our unpacking  
instructions.

Each key matches a particular owner, so you must also enter the  
owner exactly as shown on our web site.

Once again, that owner/license key is:

	Owner: Expiring OmniWeb beta license
	License Key: CQTB-OUIH-TONI-ECAZ-HHSY

I just double-checked this owner and license key information, and it  
does seem to work.  If it's not working for you, one possibility is  
that your system date is set to some time in the future, after the  
date the key expires.

There is no support for Java applets in the current beta 9 release  
(though there was back around beta 6 or so).  We'll get to that soon.

In the meantime, I'm afraid you must use Netscape or IE to configure  
the AppleShare server in Mac OS X Server, since it relies on Java

OmniWeb always does its best to present a file to the user in the  
browser when you do a normal click on a link.  If you wish to  
download a file instead, Command-click on it instead.

document to..." menu item.)

The situation where it would be appropriate is one where you're  
downloading a compressed HTML file.  In an ideal world, every HTML  
file on the web would be compressed to conserve network

supports compression, however, and will send you a compressed  
document.)

Did you unpack the installation using "gnutar"?  Some of the path  
names are too long for the standard "tar" program.

Does your Workspace console contain any additional information?

In AdminPrefs some of the bundles have the status preloaded, some  
unloaded and some simply loaded. What is the difference?

Why do bundles like Flash.plugin have status unloaded even though the  
reside in OmniWeb.app/OmniWeb.app/Resources/

The console says

Most bundles load dynamically when you first need them:  in this  
case, the mailto-*.plugin loads automatically when you click on a  
"mailto:" link, and the png.plugin loads automatically when you first  
view a png-format image.

Preloaded bundles are things which are loaded at application launch  
(the application itself, and any frameworks it links against).   
Unloaded bundles are plug-ins which aren't currently loaded into

No it won't, because OmniWeb's stub loader has no Services entry
defined in its Info-nextstep.plist. Simply adding the plist entry
from the embedded app's Info.plist does the trick (use make_services
from a shell or log out and back in to activate the change).

There was a bug in the building of the wrapper, where it didn't get the  
correct info files in the outer app wrapper.

If you copy the appropriate entries from the inner wrapper to the outer, it  
should work.  Or, you can wait for a patched beta.

To preserve your existing license which was built into the beta 8b  
distribution on X Server, copy the .omnilicense file from  
OmniWeb.app/OmniWeb.app/Resources to ~/Library/OmniLicenses (or  
/Local/Library/OmniLicenses or /Network/Library/OmniLicenses).

If you want to use OmniImage, you have three options at this point:

1.  You can install the OmniImage distribution from our web site,  
along with the compatible frameworks and plug-ins that it requires.   
(Put the plug-ins in OmniImage.app/Resources so they don't interfere  
with OmniWeb 3.0 beta 9.)

2.  You can build OmniImage yourself using the OmniImage source code  
distribution (which you'll find in  
ftp://ftp.omnigroup.com/pub/software/Source).

3.  You can wait for us to release a new distribution of OmniImage  
which is compatible with OmniWeb 3.0 beta 9.

What Web page were you loading ? I would try to load this URL(s) with my OW3.0-beta-9b installation.
I never was confronted to "micro-buttons" problems. Is this happening at the same time or at the same URL as the previous problem ?

Depends on what is the origin of the trouble. It could be bad jpeg. I saw that very often. Or it could be a particular bit depth/compression of jpeg aren't working.
When you hit "reload", is the jpeg still not displaying ?
What does the Console report ?

	There used to be a hidden "default" -- "OWTask-Web  
pages-maximumSimultaneousThreadsInGroup" -- that would control the number of  
simultaneous network connections used by OmniWeb.  Its value defaults to 10  
connections.  It used to worked in 3.0b8, but appears to be ignored in 3.0b9  
-- although there is still a reference to it somewhere in the distribution  
directory.

Attached is an HTML page that produces micro buttons for me on occasion. Also, sometimes the height of the second select box (year selection) is wrong. Viewing source and redisplaying usually fixes the problem. I see this using a 28.8 PPP connection at home, so possibly it is a timing issue when the connection is slow. I haven't seen the gray frame of depth yet with 3b9, but I only saw it infrequently with 3b8.

Try unpacking using "gnutar" rather than "gunzip" and "tar":

	gnutar xvpf OmniWeb*.tar.gz

OK, suddently my html files don't show the Omniweb icon anymore, and when I look at the Tools Inspector, Omniweb doesn't even appear as an option for reclaiming them. I use Omniweb's html editor almost exclusively and not being able to double-click html files and have Omniweb open them is a pain.

So, for the clueless, how do I re-attach Omniweb to html files?

I'm still running WO 3.5.1, so no direct actions here. But nonetheless I can  
provide you with a tried (but somewhat awkward) solution to redirection from  
within the appendToResponse:inContext: method.

Note: I've just typed this into the mail without testing it, so there are  
going to be some typos that'll have to be eliminated before this'll work.

If WO URL syntax has changed from 3.5 to 4.0, you would have to modify the  
method setElementIdOf:to: accordingly, but I'm sure you get the basic idea of  
what I'm doing.

You're bitten by the same problem that caused services to go away in  
beta 9:  we didn't put the correct information into the OmniWeb  
launcher's Info-nextstep.plist.

If you copy OmniWeb.app/OmniWeb.app/Resources/Info-nextstep.plist to  
OmniWeb.app/Resources (replacing the existing Info-nextstep.plist in  
that directory), everything should work fine.

I just got the same thing on OpenStep.

That will be a cool feature (save back to the server) if/when it works

(I'm wondering if it works now at all, or whether there's something needed  
on the http server end to allow it to work.... there has to be some login  
process I guess).

For me, RBrowser is still the tool of choice for updating webpages, although  
the 'Display' feature on OW's View Source is really helpful!

Sounds like you've unpacked the distribution using "tar", which

That setting wasn't actually a direct control for the number of  
simultaneous network connections, though it certainly had an impact.

With the new HTTP 1.1 support, we now have a notion of HTTP sessions  
(network connections) which is completely independent of whether  
they're actually running in any thread.  Unfortunately, the tuning  
parameters for HTTP sessions are currently hardcoded (although they  
could be overwritten by a plug-in) rather than looked up in defaults:  
 we'll pipeline up to three requests in a single session (HTTP 1.1  
supports asking for more than one file at a time without waiting for  
the file to actually come back), and we'll create up to four sessions  
with a single HTTP server.  We'll make those settings tunable for  
the next release.

(In the mean time, if you're a developer, you could either write a  
plug-in to override OWHTTPSessionQueue's  
-maximumNumberOfRequestsToPipeline and +maximumSessionsPerServer  
settings, or you could make the changes to the OWF source code  
directly and build up your own copy of the framework with those  
changes.)

Anyone have the HTTPS plugin working for 3xB9?

I downloaded and installed as root the RSAref  
(RSAref-2.0.0.3-PI-b.tar.gz), the SSLeay  
(SSLeay-0.9.0b.1-PI-b.tar.gz), and the HTTPS.1.04.r.PI.bs.tar.gz. The  
plugin is in  /Local/Library/Plugins, restarted Omni3b9, but it says  
it can't read HTTPS....

OmniWeb doesn't natively understand "https" URLs, and has no plug-in  
currently loaded to deal with them.

Hi Andrew,

PlugIns aren't loaded from /LocalLibrary anymore. But from the resources
of OmniWeb.app where there are loaded dynamically.

So - thinking maybe it's trying to grab the SSLeay and RSAref  
frameworks, I copied those into the OmniWeb.app wrapper to no avail.

So - being a developer, I'm trying to compile the HTTPS bundle, but  
ran into some undefined ivars. Ken may have something to say about  
all this, but when I get it working, I'll let you all know.

Is OWb9 supposed to work on DR2?  I thought I'd try it out before
MOSXS got here (still waiting on my Select membership order), but it

The HTTPS-Bundle is broken and a simple compile doesn't fix it. I try to find  
a solution for it, okay?

Stupid question, but did you recompile HTTPS against the new 1999B Omni  
frameworks (and adapt its CustomInfo.plist `OFRequiredSoftwareVersions'  
entry to `{OmniWeb = "3.0-beta-9";}')?  Mind you, I haven't got around to  
recompiling it myself (on OS4.2 by the way, but I don't think that matters  
(much)), but it may help.

It works for authenticated FTP (and, I think, HTTP) sessions now  
(assuming your authenticated session has appropriate privileges on  
the server--in fact, I suppose you wouldn't have to be authenticated  
on an FTP server if it accepts incoming files from anonymous users).

I expect we'll be enhancing this feature more in the future (say, by  
prompting for authentication if the store attempt fails), but it's  
not a priority feature for 3.0.

Not really, though it's possible that it does.

This problem isn't unique to DR2:  it appears to happen on any  
systems which have or don't have a certain type of network interface  
configured.  (I doubt this is related to the network hardware, it's  
probably just the network configuration.)

I just tracked this down, and will be releasing a patch soon.

Meaning what?  I'm not sure how to establish an authenticated FTP session w/  
OW (I know [think] there's some method for giving an FTP URL w/ username &  
password in it, but I've never used it)

Well I can understand its non-priority status.  I think this eventually will  
become a pretty standard feature, but I'm glad to see OW leading the way yet

In case anyone is interested, I managed to get the PrintExtensions-2.0  
plugin working again with the new version of OmniWeb, on OS/Mach at  
least...

Here's the patch (you may still have to adapt the Framework search path  
to where the Omni frameworks are actually located on your system -- I've  
set it to OmniWeb's standard installation location for OPENSTEP/Mach):
