Try opening a link with "Open Link" (Cmd-O). This will open a new window
directly onto whatever link you want. I also recently "discovered" the Open
File command (Cmd-o) which is similar but looks specifically at the filesystem
with a normal open panel. I find it quite convenient.
I have my OW set to open nothing on startup, since I do a lot of my browsing
on real Black NeXT hardware. (You can't beat two 20" color monitors, at
least without spending a ton o' money. :-)
