} Socks is a system in use at a lot of sites that use firewalls. It
} redirects TCP (and UDP?) connections from inside to the firewall
} machine, which connects to the outside world. Basically we've added
} support for those people behind firewalls to reach the rest of the
} universe.

Although SOCKs has its uses, surely proxy support is better for
firewalled sites. I'd also very much like proxy support, since we
proxy *everything* here - it speeds up access to much of the US data
dramatically since our offsite, and especially transatlantic,
bandwidth is limited. [Apart from anything else, if you are using the
CERN libraries don't you get proxy support for free??]

Not sure if I like the sound of the new anchor rendering... but I'll
withold real comments until I see it :-).

The ftp problems sound as though they just could be problems with
redirect handling... although that interpretation could be due to us
using proxying on everything else (where vaguely similar faults have
been seen).

	Nigel.
