hyperlink functionality

I really wish there was some middle ground between checking the
Preferences box "Automatically create attachments from typed URLs" and
being able to make typed URLs hyperlinked. I just want hyperlinks that
look like their original selves and act like hyperlinks--I do like
that part of the current functionality. If I don't check the relevant
Preferences box, then typed URLs are just dead text, like everything
else. If I do check the box, then I end up with a "shortened" version
of the URL (which is impossible to copy as the *actual* URL -- grr --
all you can get is the OO shorthand).
Also, if I check the box, I end up with the larger problem of embedded
attachments. I often edit documents that are stored across a network,
and I've gotten myself into frustrating situations because of network
connectivity issues and these embedded attachments where I have to
quit OO to escape. (In my particular example, even if I close the
document, there's apparently still stored references to its
attachments, and it's impossible to delete the document on the remote
machine until I quit OO entirely.)
