Formatting ("numbering") an entire outline

If I am outling, then later on want to add "numbers" to the outline in
a traditional academic fashion:

I, II, II = most general ideas
A, B, C = ideas at the next level of specificity
1, 2, 3 = next level
a, b, c ... i, ii, iii. = most specific...

I will do it through the numbering inspector, and I will do it section
by section.  It can be time consuming to do... How can I set this up
to do it quickly and easily?

I assume that this is a very common way to outline material--so I'm
hoping that there's some way do att this numbering scheme to an
outline after the fact.
