column style text color problem

Not sure if this is a bug, or if I'm totally missing something basic.

I'm trying to set the text color in a column to be different from the 
topic column. When I select the column (eg. Column 3) in the named 
styles window (lower left), I can change any style property using the 
appearance inspector window EXCEPT for the text color property.

I can change the background color, change the font weight, shadowing, 
border, but not the text color. I see the other changes immediately in 
the column.

Do I need to do something different to apply a text color change?
