There is a little program called MenuShade which let you change the  
brightness of the menu bar, down to black.

And if you don't like to be distracted by the desktop, Backdrop might  
be helping.

None of them related in any way to me, I didn't even discover  
them ;-), but read about "Minimize distractions on your Mac" in
