auto formatting of hostnames (which are not URLS)

I am experiencing a feature that seems overzealous and is therefore
annoying. 

Why is it that whenever I enter the characters 'www' followed by a
period I get the giant graphic image interrupting my text which is
apparently trying to inform me that I have entered a URL, when I have
not. I may have entered a hostname but certainly not a URL. I can write
www.eatme.now and it creates a URL graphic! 

I did not prefix this string/hostname with a internet protocol, such as
the string: "http://"; which would make the text a URL. 

If it is not a URL then formatting it as such is inappropriate, IMHO.

This wart is not-so-clean on an otherwise world class application. Can
this be changed on the next release?
