Managing Styles

I'm experiencing a lot of difficulties using styles, which I suspect is
caused by the fact that I don't understand how to use them. Can anyone
point me to a good tutorial on the subject or perhaps explain how to
manage some of the symptoms listed below. I've used the help function
but it doesn't immediately offer solutions to the type of problem listed
below.
Symptoms:
I have a row at level 1 and I indent it to level 4. Then I apply the
style I want. Although the style is listed in the "Style Attributes"
window it does not take precedence on the displayed text. This seems to
be because of a style that was applied at level 1. So I now have an
attributes window that lists four levels of style attributes with my
preferred style at the top but somehow its being overidden by something
lower in the hierarchy.
I indent this same row to level 5 and then outdent the row back to level
4 and now the style appears on the row.
Another problem I've found is that sometimes I cannot clear existing
styles with the contextual menu.
I suspect this is all cockpit error but at the moment I'm having to
manage the style of every row and this is extremely inefficient.
Does anyone have any suggestions on a quick way to become an expert and
hence much more efficient.
