pasting a text list into multiple rows/items in oop

Whether multiple rows or one row is created seems to depend on two  
factors.

1. OO has to be in "row-select mode", not "row-editing mode".  That  
is, you should have a vertical typing cursor inside the topic of a  
row.  Otherwise, OO assumes you want to "type" inside that row when  
you paste.

2. The source application (from which you copied the text) also seems  
to matter.  I seem to recall have trouble copying from Word and  
Pasting into OO.  If a source application is behaving badly, I  
usually paste the text into BBEdit and then copy again from there  
before pasting into OO.  If you don't have BBEdit you could try any  
old text editor.  Perhaps TextEdit would work.
