I was sort of afraid that would be the case.

Now I'm wondering if it would be possible to write a couple of
applescripts to transform a well-formatted text document to OO and
back again as needed.

BTW, thanks to the previous poster who suggested the File Sync tool. 
It works great and it's making my life quite a bit easier.
