style inheritance is driving me crazy

Is there any way to set styles to NOT inherit by default? 

Right now if I set a style on a row all children inherit the style by
default - not anywhere close to what I need.  The only way I can see
to change this behavior is by deleting the inherit attribute from the
style view.  This is annoying for  a couple of reasons.  1) No
keyboard shortcut to the style view, 2) I have to make the change for
every row with a named style.

Even then, the next row down (sibling, not child) inherits the style.
