reliability of backups

As I understand it, the auto-save is currently writing to the resource 
fork for files without attachments.  I wonder if power fail or kernel 
crash style testing has been done with this implementation.  What 
happens if the system crashes while OO is in the process of writing the 
autosave?  What if the system crashes during a normal save? This design 
seems to be expecting a lot from the file system.
