Ver 3 Weaker graphic design distracts

The problem we were trying to solve there was that the old selection 
model that OO2 used didn't make it clear to users that selecting a 
parent implicitly selected the children as well. Thus, the new borders 
we put up that surround everything that's selected...

Would simply making the colors softer make this work better for you, or 
is there some other interface entirely you're envisioning?
