AppleScript: Tyro's frustration

I wanted a script that would export _only_ the notes. So I thought I'd
start by modifying the existing sample script "Export Outline and Notes"
by Mark Guzdial which works just fine (Thanks Mark!). I copied and pasted
the script into a new script intending to modify it, but without even
making any changes the new script failed with the syntax error:

Can't get number of rows of document
1. Access not allowed

Moreover any attempt to construct a similar script from scratch that tries
to get "the number of rows" fails in the same way.

Obviously I'm doing something absurdly boneheaded. Would someone be kind
enough to put me out of my misery and point it out?
