Rather than have Omni Group spend time coding this ;)  you may want to just
install ICeCoffEE <http://web.sabi.net/nriley/software/>.

It's an OS X implementaion of ICeTEe, and lets you command-click on URLs in
any Cocoa app to open them in the appropriate app (Web URLs in Web broswer,
email addresses in email client, etc.).
