the network in order to perform lookups). OmniDictionary also provides
a "Define in OmniDictionary" Service so you can select unrecognized
words in all your favorite apps and simply hit cmd-= to perform a lookup.

OmniDictionary 1.1 is now available for Rhapsody DR2. This is a client
for network-based dictionaries (thus requires that you be connected
to the
network in order to perform lookups). This release fixes a few bugs
and makes
a few UI improvements.
See http://www.omnigroup.com/Software/OmniDictionary/ for more info or to
download the application. Questions and other feedback should be sent to
omnidictionary@omnigroup.com
Version 1.1 release notes:
- Fixed a bug causing long timeouts on lookups when neither a definition
nor any possible alternates were found.
- Attempts to reconnect to dictionary server if connection is lost for
some reason.
- Now uses a combo-box for entry, allowing quick return to previous
lookups.
- Remembers your dictionary selection between sessions.
- Minor UI tweaking.

Ok folks, we're really sorry about this, but for various reasons we
didn't get a new OmniWeb release out when we expected to, and now we
have another problem: due to a miscalculation, the most recent
OmniWeb beta license has already expired. (With the exception of the
distribution included on the Mac OS X Server CD, which should still
run fine.)
Beta 9 should be out this evening, but here's another OmniWeb
license that doesn't expire for a couple more weeks. Make sure to
enter the license information exactly as given. Note that the license
claims to expire April 15, but it actually expires a bit earlier
than that, depending on your location. Among other improvements, beta
9 shouldn't have that problem.

OmniCVSEOModelerBundle 1.2 has been released. This plug-in for
EOModeler preserves CVS information when models are modified, and
also provides some maintenance of the CVS Entries file so you need
not manually cvs add/remove files inside the eomodeld. This release
has been updated for EOF 3.0 and Mac OS X Server, and also fixes a
couple of bugs. The bundle is available as a binary for Mac OS X
Server and in source form.

Subject: Quake II support for Mac OS X Server final release
Message-ID: <199904011145.DAA03438@ignem.omnigroup.com>
Quake II now supports the official release of Mac OS X Server. In
the official release of Mac OS X Server one of the resources that
Quake II relies on was moved. (In Mac OS X Server the SoundKit became
a private framework; in Rhapsody DR2 it was a public framework.)
This prevents the earlier release of Quake II for Rhapsody DR2 from
running on Mac OS X Server.
We have updated Quake II to look for that resource in its new
location. No other changes have been made in this release. The
updated version can be downloaded from
http://www.omnigroup.com/Software/Quake2/.
Users who downloaded the previous release don't necessarily need to
download this new release in order to use it on Mac OS X Server final
release; they could simply make a link from
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/SoundKit.framework to
/System/Library/Frameworks/SoundKit.framework. (Similarly, users with
Rhapsody DR2 for PowerPC should be able to use the new release
simply by making the reverse link, though there is no advantage to
this release vs the prior release.)

Subject: The Omni Group Ships OmniWeb 3.0 for Mac OS X
Message-ID: <199907210730.AAA20905@ignem.omnigroup.com>
The Omni Group Ships OmniWeb 3.0 for Mac OS X
Seattle ? July 20, 1999
The Omni Group announced today that they have shipped OmniWeb 3.0
for Mac OS X Server, Mac OS X DP1, and OpenStep 4.2 systems.
Representing almost exactly two years of development since OmniWeb
2.7, the 3.0 release adds functionality, speed, and compatibility to
a web browser that was already much-loved for its ease-of-use and
clean interface. OmniWeb is the most mature web browser in existence:
its first version was released on March 3, 1994, before Netscape
incorporated and before Spry wrote Internet Explorer for Microsoft.
OmniWeb has undergone three major architecture rewrites since its
early days ? it is now so modular that InfoSeek and other companies
have licensed sections of its library to parse HTML files quickly.
OmniWeb 3.0 is the only native web browser for Mac OS X Server and
Mac OS X, and the only web browser on any platform that is truly
multi-threaded; it will actually get faster on multi-processor
machines. During the five year development of OmniWeb, other browsers
have often borrowed features that Omni pioneered, including
heirarchical bookmarks, the separate bookmark window, drag-and-drop
URLs between windows and bookmarks, bookmarks that check themselves
for updates, and downloading files by drag-and-drop. In addition,
Sherlock's web searching was inspired by OmniWeb's advanced search
panel, the first to query multiple search engines simultaneously and
combine the results in a table. Despite these attempts at copying
OmniWeb, most users feel that OmniWeb does the best job of tightly
integrating what is useful and throwing out what is not. OmniWeb is
designed to be a tool, not a flashy toy, and Omni believes any good
tool should be invisible when it is doing its job correctly.
OmniWeb 3.0 is free to the first user at any site, and costs $59.95
per machine or user beyond that. Complete educational and volume
prices are available at
http://www.omnigroup.com/products/omniweb/pricing/.
The Omni Group (also known as Omni Development, Inc.) has been
writing custom and commercial sofware for OpenStep systems (most
recently Mac OS X) for seven years, and is guided by the principle
that software should not only be be useful, it should also be a joy
to use. OmniWeb's home page is
http://www.omnigroup.com/products/omniweb/. Omni's home page is

Subject: OmniMousePatch beta driver now available (and Quake 3 Arena Test v1.08)
Message-ID: <199908041209.FAA13859@scyther.omnigroup.com>
The OmniMousePatch driver enables the right mouse button on USB mice
on Mac OS X Server. (Obviously, this only works with multibutton
mice--we've only tested it with Logitech mice, which is part of why
this is still a beta release.)
You'll find this first release of the mouse patch driver at
ftp://ftp.omnigroup.com/pub/software/MacOSX/OmniMousePatch-0.1.gnutar.gz.
Unfortunately, there's no ReadMe and no web page, but you can
install and load it by running the following commands as root (after
downloading it):
gnutar xzpf OmniMousePatch-0.1.gnutar.gz -C /
/etc/startup/3000_OmniMousePatchDevice
At this point, the right mouse button will immediately start
working: no reboot is necessary.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. I'll be
submitting the mouse driver fixes to Darwin, so hopefully the right
mouse button will work out of the box in future Mac OS X Server
releases.
(I also just released the 1.08 update to our Quake 3 Arena Test
port, which you can find at
http://www.omnigroup.com/community/freeware/quake3/.)
Enjoy!

Subject: OmniObjectMeter 1.0 rc1 available
Message-ID: <199908240730.AAA27215@electabuzz.omnigroup.com>
OmniObjectMeter 1.0 Release Candidate 1 (the application formerly
known as OmniObjectAlloc) is now available at
http://www.omnigroup.com/products/omniobjectmeter/
This release has a 5-seat license that expires Sep 20, 1999.
Assuming no major bugs are found, this will be the 1.0 release.
Pricing will be announced within the next couple weeks.
The release notes for this version follow below. In general, the
this version is significantly improved in speed and usability over
the previous betas.
? Renamed from OmniObjectAlloc. The new name better indicates the
scope of the functionality in the application.
? Renamed OOAMachClient.framework to be OmniObjectMeter.framework
to make it more obviously associated with OmniObjectMeter.
? Under MacOS X Server, the standard framework search path is used
to find the OmniObjectMeter framework. Thus, you can now install
OmniObjectMeter in your home directory, /Local or /Network.
? Added demo mode support for evaluation when unlicensed.
? Fixed Event Matching panel so that you can hit 'g' or 'u' to
group/ungroup the selected events. This makes processing a large
number of events much more pleasant (bulk event matching will be in a
later release).
? Removed the misfeature that caused the same row in the classes
table view to be scrolled to visible every couple seconds.
? Fixed the inspector panel popping up every couple seconds in
some situations.
? Huge optimizations in storing dead objects (and fairly major
optimizations in live objects). This makes it possible to run
OmniObjectMeter for much longer periods of time when trying to
reproduce a zombie bug.
? Fixed automatic selection of companion events when you select an
event in a group.
? 'Begin Mark' automatically selects the new mark.
? When switching marks, if a class is selected, it is scrolled to
visible.
? When the child process is started after being killed, the list
of marks is reset.
? Fixed a hanging bug when stopping a child process.
? Fixed menu layout on MacOS X Server.
? Selecting source icons when the matching source directory hasn't
been added to the project now allows you to add the source directory
immediately no matter which panel you clicked on.
? When the Find panel is brought up, the contents of the text
field are selected.
? Beeps if no object is found.
? You can now select whether to find only live objects or live and
dead objects.
? If an object is found but is in a mark that isn't the currently
selected mark, the selected mark is changed (and everything is
scrolled to visible).
? Changing marks updates the list of objects in the selected class.
? Closing a document or quitting when there are running children
prompts you, allowing you to kill the children or cancel.
? Removed 'Wait for Debugger' support. This was not reliable and
isn't necessary now that 'Start Child Task Manually' is implemented.
? Updated documentation.

Message-ID: <199908280429.VAA18066@scyther.omnigroup.com>
PLEASE TEST THIS RELEASE. AS FAR AS WE KNOW, THIS IS IT. THE VERSION THAT
WILL SHIP.
This will hopefully be our last beta before our release candidate. We almost
made this the release candidate, except we fixed so many bugs and we're not
sure what the fallout will be.
We have no known outstanding bugs that will be fixed for 1.0. (There is a
crasher in Mac OS X Server we're trying to fix, but it is very rare and does
not corrupt data.) Of course, we might still have bugs that we don't know
about, and we'll fix those if you help us find them...
ftp://ftp.omnigroup.com/pub/outgoing/Backup/OmniGroupBackup-1.0-beta-5a.pkg.tar
Release notes are on:
http://www.omnigroup.com/products/omnigroupbackup/releasenotes/
In particular, we discovered and worked around a bug in Mac OS X Server's
NSTimer object that was keeping scheduled backups from firing when you weren't
running Backup or Restore. (Incidentally, the same bug also affects OmniWeb
-- sometimes pages won't get flushed from the cache until you wiggle the
mouse. It's a really boner bug.)
We are using OmniGroup Backup to do all our internal backups now, for all our
source code and our 100GB MP3 company jukebox. It IS beta software, so
beware and all that, but note that we trust it enough to bet our company on
it.

Message-ID: <199909081030.DAA24075@scyther.omnigroup.com>
Hello All,
Sorry about Backup Beta 5's untimely expiration. Clearly, we're not good at
guessing when our next beta will be out.
We tried to get another beta ready for today, but some testers have turned up
a bug which we'd like to fix, and we're in the middle of that fix. We don't
want to release a beta-6 with the same bug and then release beta-7 in two
days.
So, if you can just hang with us, we'll have another beta out presently.
Hopefully, the last beta. For real.

Subject: OmniGroup Backup 1.0 release candidate 1 is now available
Message-ID: <199909100922.CAA20970@scyther.omnigroup.com>
OmniGroup Backup 1.0 release candidate 1 is now from
http://www.omnigroup.com/products/omnigroupbackup/.
(The web site itself has not been updated--it still refers to beta
5--but its download link will take you to the new release. We'll
update our web site tomorrow to describe the changes between beta 5
and release candidate 1.)
This release expires on September 21. We anticipate that the only
changes between this release and the final release will be to change
the version number, to change the window border color (actually, that
happens automatically when the version number changes), to remove
the code which expires the application, and to switch over to the
final Backup license keys. (Those with current Pro licenses will
need to enter new keys when we do this.)

Subject: PRESS RELEASE: The Omni Group Ships OmniGroup Backup, updates OmniWeb
Message-ID: <199910080147.SAA20938@scyther.omnigroup.com>
(An HTML version of this press release is available at
.)
The Omni Group Ships OmniGroup Backup, updates OmniWeb
Wednesday, October 6, 1999
The Omni Group today announced that
OmniGroup Backup 1.0.2
, the only backup
solution designed for Mac OS X Server, is now shipping and available
for immediate download.
OmniGroup Backup Personal Edition is fully functional and free to
all users of Mac OS X Server. It gives users the ability to back up
and restore files from extended Macintosh (HFS+) and Unix (UFS)
volumes, as well as set a schedule for unattended backups. The
Professional Edition requires a license, available directly from Omni
. It has
extra features including the ability to back up Unix network volumes
(via NFS) and to create unlimited fileSets and archives.
Omni president Wil Shipley commented, "We are very happy to be
providing the backup software for this community -- Mac OS X is a
technology in which we believe very strongly. We decided a year ago
to assist Apple by writing an application of their choosing for them
for free, and this was what they said would help their customers the
most. We're very pleased with the results so far, and we have some
really cool plans for future versions of Backup, as well."
Omni encourages users to suggest improvements they'd like to see in
Backup (and all their products), and is trying to start a new
industry trend by posting the features Omni hopes to add to future
versions for users to review and comment on
. "When
a user buys a piece of software, it's often with the expectation that
it will grow over time. We'd like our users to know what directions
we plan grow in, so they can make better decisions," Shipley mused,
then added, "On the other hand, it is the only backup solution on OS
X, and, hey, it's free, so the choice seems obvious to us, but we're
all about pleasing the customer, here."
"One of our design goals in building a backup solution was to make
sure that our users never felt that their data was being held hostage
by a proprietary solution," said Ken Case, Omni's director of
engineering. "To that end, we've published the backup file format on
our web site
so
that any developer can write an application which can read and write
our backups."
In separate news, OmniWeb 3.0.2
was also released today,
which fixes a number of minor bugs that have become apparent since
OmniWeb 3.0 (the most recent public release).
Shipley's final words were, "I find the whole idea of sending out a
press release where you quote yourself rather silly, but since
everyone else does it, I'll do it, too." Ken added, "Yeah, me too."
For information about this press release, Omni, or Omni products,
contact Wil Shipley by e-mail , or phone

statements which we don't promise will necessarily come true. As if.

Release notes for 1.0.3 (also available at
http://www.omnigroup.com/products/omnigroupbackup/releasenotes/):
The following bugs are fixed in this release:
* Aborting a restore only aborts the restore of the current
file, rather than the entire restore operation.
* Under some circumstances, a scheduled backup would fail
with a message about the archive being locked by another
process when it wasn't actually locked (manual backups
on the archive would work just fine).
