Myriad Pro Height

I'm having a weird issue where Myriad Pro (and some other fonts) appear to
be way to tall, with the vertical height continuing far below the area
normally used by descenders.

http://skitch.com/wycats/im81/untitled (specifically the inner box).

Is there a way to normalize the vertical whitespace in fonts?
