any way to make an arbitrary closed line drawing into a shape?

Use the "Pen Tool" to create a fillable shape. It's the 5th drawing
tool on the toolbar... you may need to expand the list by pressing the
button at the end of the drawing tools. Alternatively, just hold the
'e' keyboard button while clicking around your canvas, creating the
vertexes of your new polygon.
If you want curves, you'll have to adjust your shape with bezier
curves... Hold the command key while clicking and dragging on any
corner of your shape.
Hope that helps.
