Way to change the default for automatic layout to 'false'?

Off the top of my head, what you're doing *should* work. The auto-
layout setting is stored in the .graffle file just like anything else,
and it shouldn't be changed by saveAs-and-edit. Setting an outline
style can turn on autolayout (if the outline style specifies that),
but it doesn't sound like you're doing that.

The closest thing to a default setting is that when you create a new
document it gets the autolayout setting from the template you use. But
that shouldn't be affecting your document in the work pattern you
describe.
