Line hops

Hi,

I am a relatively beginning user, so I'm sorry if this question is  
overly basic.

Here is what I'm trying to accomplish:
I have the five parallel lines of a musical staff. What I want to do  
with OG is not put individual notes on these lines, but have a melody  
be represented by a continuous line that travels up and down the  
staff as it precedes from left to right. I know how to create the  
line I need with the line tool, but the lines of the staff keep  
getting in the way. I basically want the continuous melody line to be  
able to either ignore lines of the staff or touch on them and then  
change directions up or down. Is that at all clear?

I know that the "line hop" function should be able to accomplish  
this, but I haven't been able to make anything happen at all with it.  
First of all, do I make a line hop selection for the continuous  
melody line, or for the lines of the staff? I've tried both ad  
nauseum but have not been able to change behavior, which is that when  
my melody line crosses the first line of the staff it stops dead.
