Would someone please confirm that you cannot export UML class diagrams to V= isio? After exporting a class diagram to Visio, I inspected the file in BBEd= it, and there were no attributes or operations listed.

I'd make it OG Pro-only, and if the user buys both OG Pro and OO, they magically work together. That's $150 per seat (at current prices) worth of chocolatey goodness, and a steal even at $200+, IMHO. * * * Whew! That was a mouthful. Any ideas or suggestions, either from folks at Omni or people on the mailing list? Is the .graffle XML file format and its capabilities documented anywhere yet? How about the .ooutline format? Are the bug / feature request databases for either product publically accessible in any way? I suppose that I should make the typical "Databases can be used for everything! Therefore, it's a huge killer app!" (...with the unspoken, "Therefore, please make THIS feature request top priority!") statements here. But whatever, either way, I'll end up with something that will work in the interim... I'll keep you all posted about the ERD auto-generation, but in the bigger picture, I guess I'm a big advocate of integrating two cool products to make them even cooler. Thanks, and keep up the great work! You can delete a selection of Canvases using the delete button on the panel (marked with a minus sign) which is also for deleting one Canvas. You can also drag one or a selection of Canvases between documents. I often find this useful. You can also drag a Master Canvas onto one or a selection of Canvases, to add master dependency to them. You can also drag one or a selection of Canvases to a different location in the Canvases list. You can also Remove Master Dependency from a selected group of Canvases. (Hmm, Add Layer only applies to the last-added Canvas in the selection, for some reason. Bug?) The main thing is selecting a group of canvases, which is done in the usual Mac way, that is a) to select one thing, click it once b) to add a single item to the selection, command-click it c) to add a range (i.e. everything between an item and the currenct selection set, inclusive), shift-click the item. You can't select a group by dragging, as you can graphics on the Canvas surface, or in the Finder, because "drag" means "move" in the Canvases panel. Masking a portion won't work with shadowing, as you found out. And fonts don't act as shapes that can be subtracted. (The invisible rectangle in which the text resides can be subtracted, but that's not useful to you.) I think you'll have to draw a free-form version of the letter, using Omnigraffle's polygon and/or line tools. If you can get a vector version of the 'R' somewhere, then maybe you can import that into Omnigraffle, and subtract out a portion using the Edit|Shape|Subtract menu feature. I've seen some graphics programs that let you export fonts as vector graphics, but I don't remember where I saw that. Hope that helps somewhat. If it's in the bitmaps, can't you do that in PhotoShop, Graphic Converter or whatever before you import them, then just use black or a shade of grey for your shapes? Photoshop would be better as you can use layers erasing all but the one colour on layer 1, and making the background layer greyscale. Flatten the image, save and import. If you want the colour in your shapes, convert the bitmaps to greyscale before importing, then use greys plus the one colour where necessary in your OG shapes? That may work, or it may not - if the greys in the PDF are being specified as RGB then a printer *may* barf. Sounds weird, but printers and colours are weird. Er, IMHO :-) Could setting up a ColorSync (sic) filter to postprocess the PDF file be a useful way to get real true greys? Sometimes you just have to manually reset the transparent color. Remember that transparency in bitmaps is just a definition of which single color code in the image's palette should be interpreted as transparent. So select the transparency tool and click on the black area that you want to be transparent. Look carefully at the image because if the same black color code appears elsewhere in the image (like maybe a border) then that will become transparent too, even though you didn't click on it explicitly. If you still don't see the transparency checkerboard, try double- clicking on the transparency tool... I think there is a checkbox to control that viewing option. Disclaimer: Another type of transparency (more flexible) is accomplished with an "alpha channel"... that's another story altogether. However, if you are already working with an alpha channel, I've heard that GC does something backwards, like black vs. white, in defining the alpha channel... but that was a while ago. Has anyone encountered this problem? I haven't seen that issue, but I have run into a lot of issues with the shading and transparency. If I know the image is going to be modified or used by multiple writers, I make sure I turn off shading and limit the transparency. You might try some very basic images first and see if you're having problems with all vdx files, or just a particular one. But it seems that the problem is more complex, depending on which style you use when you first lay out your chart. I started by entering the outline with OGP switched for the Boxes style, as I said, and I then tried switching the styles, and several of them--Chalk, Notes, Clouds (I think) the three Org Chart versions--all produced crossing lines. I then thought I would start from a different point, so I cleared the diagram, switched the style to Chalk and redid the outline. It laid out properly without crossing lines, but when I switched style to simple Org Chart it reproduced the problem. On the other hand, when I switched it back again to Chalk, it was laid out properly without the crossing lines. Starting once again with OGP set to Org Chart (plain) produced the same intersecting lines problem, but on switching to Chalk, the diagram was laid out properly. I then tried switching to Boxes, but this was too much for OGPro and it crashed--the first time in such a long time that I can't ever remember this version crashing! Clearly, there is something going on with Boxes, and to a certain, though perhaps not so serious extent with Org Chart. I am going to forward a copy of this to OmniGraffle Support, to go with the crash report. The crash, of course, is a crash. Bad OG! Clouds and Chalk use a force-directed layout. The result of the layout algorithm is not deterministic. It may come out differently on different invocations and clearly doesn't guarantee that there will be no line crossings. Such a guarantee is impossible in the general case, thought it ought to be possible for a tree. One might argue, at least from Cameron's example, that these are feature limitations. Notes, Org Chart, and Boxes use orthogonal connectors. Notes uses custom magnets on the shapes and they're all interior to the shapes. The layout algorithm, orthogonal connector turn-point positioning, and the magnet setup interact to produce the unsatisfactory results there. I'd say that the Org Chart and Boxes situations are the worst, because in this example there's information lost in doing the layout. I'd call that a bug. (Lines uses orthogonal connectors, too, but its shapes are lines, which simplifies the problem.) Graph layout and rendering is still a very tricky business. Perhaps we can forgive a simple ( :-) ) drawing program for still having some problems in this area. - John Gersh At 11:17 AM +0800 2/7/07, Mark R. Try this: 1. Create the black circle for the end of the needle, at the middle of the overall speedo. 2. Place magnets manually on the perimeter of the outer circle. Since I don't think OG has a way to place these geometrically evenly as the illustration shows, it would probably be best to use image as an underlay. If you need this really accurate it might be better to draw in Illustrator (where it has step-function rotation around a point), and import as a PDF object 3. Draw lines from the center of the small circle to each magnet 4. Draw a white circle (no border, white fill) concentric with the others and sitting in between them in terms of stacking, so that it covers up the tick marks up to where you want. The red area could be done by drawing a red circle to match the size of the outer, than manually masking with white objects. There might be a more elegant way of doing it using object booleans. In the Style:Image inspector (which you can select from the Inspector menu), you can change the image size from "Stretched" to "Natural Size", then change the image's scale to 75% (or whatever). Alternatively, you could place a box underneath the image rather than adding the border to the image shape itself. After positioning the two shapes the way you want (with the image over the box), you can group the two to make sure they move and scale together. Hope this helps! Shape combinations have been meticulously looked over and we've fixed the lion's share of bugs that have resulted in unexpected results, error panels, and a crash or two. There are still a small number of outstanding issues that will be addressed before the final release. Microsoft Visio XML import and export support has gotten a good deal of attention as well, fixing rendering bugs as well as allowing objects on master canvases and text variables to export properly. Along with hundreds of bug fixes, we've offered a few new features as well: Basic shapes can now be converted to custom polygonal/bezier shapes and vice versa; Layers can now be merged; Files can be compressed upon saving. Three's also the Document Settings Inspector -- A new inspector has been added which shows document creation and change information, allows file compression, and per-document settings for saving the file as a flat file or file package. Currently this inspector resides in the Canvas: inspector group, we are considering breaking it out into its own group; feedback is greatly appreciated. OmniGraffle 4.2 beta 1 requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later to run. Please understand that this version is still under development, and due to the large number of changes and fixes in this first beta release, foreign language localizations are pretty broken. The beta 2 release will be the UI freeze, and that release will be the one released to our localization teams for that work to be done. Apologies to our international users for the inconvenience this may cause. As always, OmniGraffle 4.1.2 is still available for download. Voluminous release notes are up for perusal, please direct your feedback to our support page or by using the Send Feedback feature in your copy of OmniGraffle. Enjoy the new beta now! I see that you had to hack around a bit to get the red arc; Here's how to use shape combinations to get a real arc in OmniGraffle Pro: - Create a circle - Create another, somewhat smaller, circle - Use smart guides to put the smaller circle directly in the center of the bigger one - Select both circles and choose "Edit > Shapes > Subtract Shapes" to make a ring - Use the Pen tool to draw a triangle, with one point in the center of the ring, and two points outside the ring such that the triangle overlaps the area that you want to make into an arc (if you already had your speedometer tick marks in place, you could use them as a guide to where the triangle's edges should be) - Select the ring and the triangle, then choose "Edit > Shapes > Intersect Shapes" to create the arc Here's a diagram of the steps: http://jetfuel.metalbat.com/blah/Graffle%20Arc.png Be well, WVH On Feb 15, 2007, at 10:17, Paco Hope wrote: > Sean Ahern wrote: >> You can use a script to lay out tick marks in a circular arc. If you want to see how arrows are really drawn, reduce the opacity of a thickly stroked line with arrowheads and look carefully at the arrow... I guess OG is just asking OS X to draw "arrows" for them, but the results aren't (IMO) pretty enough for our expectations ;-) Cheers, Chris From ahern at ornl.gov Mon Feb 19 07:52:18 2007 From: ahern at ornl.gov (Sean Ahern) Date: Fri May 25 12:41:04 2007 Subject: Tuomo Suominen/Kustantamopalvelut/Yleinen kirjallisuus/WSOY/fi is out of the office. When you drag an instance into a document, the tab setting is maintained. There does have to be some text in the block, but if you include only one word (e.g., "NoTabs") it will be automatically selected when you double-click the block and written over when you begin typing. Not as easy as a default setting or style, which don't seem to be possible, but probably quicker than dragging away all those tabs. - John Gersh At 11:36 AM -0500 2/19/07, Chris Moritz wrote: >I don't know how many times I've had to manually drag off ten or more >default tab stops when creating a text block object. Not sure about other revs (.1, non-Pro, etc). - make your base shape - ctrl-click - select "Make Points Editable" - create your table - choose your corner shape within the table - Command-click on the corner control point to make the bezier controls appear You can make your table cell editable after you make the table, but it's just a little easier to get it done first. You can command click more than once, and you can also move your control point around (inward seems to be the best bet). Fair to say it's not as easy as selecting corner radius, but it's possible to get one rounded corner that way. Once you figure it out, I suppose you could copy as applescript to get the proportions. -john At 8:31 PM +0000 2/24/07, Marc Palmer wrote: >[repost: saw no response. surely there's a way/workaround? I find it easiest to make a table with the number of rows and cells you want, ungoup the table, manipulate the shapes, then select them all and make them into a table again. http://jetfuel.metalbat.com/blah/Round%20Table.png Bill On Feb 24, 2007, at 13:20, John Oram wrote: > Hey Marc- > > In OG Pro 4.2 beta 1, you can make points in shapes editable. OmniGraffle accepts most images types, so any source of clipart or stock photos can be used. After dragging the image onto the canvas (or placing it there with copy and paste), you can use OmniGraffle's inspectors to change the shape, zoom into a particular portion of the image, adding borders and shadows, etc. I usually look for images in PDF or PNG formats, but OmniGraffle also understands TIFF, JPEG, GIF, and quite a few other image formats. (I made my wife's first Mother's Day card by dragging a series of pictures of our daughter onto the canvas, changing the pictures' shapes to ovals and adding borders to make a frame, and adjusting the positioning of each picture within its frame.) Hope this helps! Ken P.S. -- I know you know of Graffletopia, but for those who don't (or who haven't looked at it recently) the URL is http:// www.graffletopia.com/.
