No Geometry for line object?

Scenario: Crated a rectangular object on a blank document. Added a line,
but started it within the rectangle. Positioned the line within the
rectangle using magnets on the rectangle. Duplicated the line and
positioned it, again using magnets. 

Problem: First line shows the geometry metrics grayed out with no data.
The second line shows the geometry metrics as expected. Why would the
first line not  have any geometry metrics?
