aligning some objects to another object

Odd.  I was indeed using large objects, so that may well be the  
difference.  Even if you can't see a visual difference, you can tell  
if objects have moved by watching their positions in the inspector.   
That should give you a definitive answer.  You can also zoom into  
that location in the canvas for more visual precision.
