OK, I know it's off-topic, but I've often wondered exactly how
companies estimate the damage caused by viruses, worms, etc in
the gazillions of dollars.

Just exactly what is it they do?? (besides creative accounting).

Imagine if you had to take out corporate insurance against viruses:

Windows: (assuming 80,000 Windows viruses)
$1 per potential virus per month = $960,000 per year.

Mac OS X:
$Zero.

I can imagine one day soon companies being taken to court for
failing to implement proper anti-viral procedures, or for failing
to protect their networks from attacks.

Looks to me like a sound financial incentive to switch!
