Distorting shapes

I need to draw freehand shapes that are distortions of circles.  I'd 
like to take actual circles and add handles and stretch 'em into the 
paths I need.   Is there a way to distort shapes, or do I have to 
draw them freehand?

(Even better would be to scan a drawing and turn that into a shape, 
but I assume that's not possible.)
