I've noticed that OG runs slow with big, complex diagrams too.

One thing that effects this is the grid size.  Things definitely run 
slower with a finely-spaced grid.   It helps to set the grid spacing 
to fine only for as long as you need it (for manipulating small 
objects) and then revert back to a coarser grid for everything else.
