You mean like the note functionality in OmniOutliner, hint hint :-)

You could embed a URL which then takes you to an HTML page with all sorts of
textual or graphical explanations or to another OG document of the same sort
or you could use a script to do something even more involved.

Barring that and I don't have my OG in front of me, a script might toggle
the visibility of a layer with explanations. If you can't do that with
layers, how about turning, say, white text 'hidden' somewhere into black
text thereby making it 'visible'. OK, that was cheap :-)
