align trouble w/ rotated objects

I've noticed something vaguely similar. When I create a graphic and add a
lot of magnets to it (say, all along the left edge), then create a new
graphic, rotate it 90 degrees clockwise and paste those magnets, the magnets
all go on the *top*, not the left edge.
It seems that rotated images are always rotated. That makes some sense, but
sometimes I just need the graphic to BE the other way so I can move magnets
around etc. There needs to be a way to commit to a rotation, if that makes
sense.
