Memory compatible with BOTH Macbook and Macbook Pro - Max memory for Macbook

Hi,

Relatively stupid question here about memory (the answer is STFW I
know, but I'm covered up in reading in other parts of the web than
hunting down memory information and looking for compatibility options
between MB and MB Pro..)

   I have a Macbook (MacBook1,1) that currently has 1GB of memory (2
512MB). I have read that the Macbook (at least my model) will only
recognize 3 GB of memory. Does it make sense to replace 1 of the
DIMMs with a 1 GB (total of 1.5 GB) given that 2GB DIMMs (AFAIK,
still) quite expensive? Or will the machine run faster if I replace
both with a 2 1GB DIMMs in a matched pair?

Is there memory out there that will run in both this Macbook and
the Macbook Pro, where it would make sense to invest in getting 2 GB
DIMMs, knowing that they could swapped into the new machine. Or
should I just get MacBook Pro and retire this to be a car music
server, house music server, portable audio recording station, etc..

Jim
