Time Capsule - accessing backup via Time Machine

Finally got my TC (terabyte) set up as backup for my brand new MacPro
(over cat 6 wire). VERY NICE device !!!!! Love it !
But ...
If I haven't accessed Time Machine in a while, there's a 15 seconds
delay for TM to get the drive up and running (sleep mode?). Then,
once I'm in Time Machine, I can't click CANCEL to change search
parameters or exit. The cancel button is unresponsive .. for up to 30
seconds or so. After Cancel has been activated and I'm brought back
to my desktop, my Dock disappears and I see a spinning pinwheel.
Eventually, my desktop comes back to life. Is this the Finder having
difficulty with a drive that it's mounting ? or a drive that hasn't
fully spun up ? or ?
Now, if I hit TM again, all is fine and things are quick. Very nice!
The behavior is only apparent upon hitting TM the first time -- or
after some time has gone by (not sure of the interval).
Is this indicative of the drive perhaps being in sleep mode and having
to spin up?
Is this behavior unique to mine TC ? or the Terabyte version?
Is there a way to keep the drive from going to sleep ?
Thanks,
Kevin
