Looking for details on keychains

I'm continuing to have the World's Worst Time dealing with broken
keychains after upgrading to Leopard.

I've never really paid attention to keychains, they've just worked up
to this point, but now I really need to grok the fulness of these
puppies to understand what's happening and how to safely fix it.

I've searched for underlying materials about keychain or Keychain
Access.app but nothing is leaping to the top.

I'd appreciate a pointer into the right place.
