Finder woes

I have noticed this recently, say the last week or so.   It is  
ignoring finder preferences and "view options" for the sidebar and  
home when using cmd-n open a new finder, and sometimes when double  
clicking on the HD desktop icon.  Not entirely consistent, but did  
persist across one restart, hasn't been annoying enough to me yet to  
dig any deeper.
